The Saha Chapel

Saha (German Saage ) is a village ( Estonian küla ) in the Estonian district of Harju . It belongs to the rural community of Jõelähtme . Saha has 118 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2007).

The village of Saha was first mentioned in a document in 1241. The settlement area is probably much older.

Half a kilometer from the village center is the Saha chapel on a hill . The first sacred building was probably built from wood around 1220, but was destroyed during an uprising in 1223. The Saha Cemetery was probably laid out in the same year.

The stone church, which has been preserved in its original appearance to this day, probably dates from the first half of the 15th century. The church is well proportioned. It has no choir room . The northwest corner tower with its spiral staircase is remarkable. With its thick walls, fortified doors and narrow, high windows, the building also served defensive purposes. It was extensively restored in 1968–71.
