At the time of the private railway companies, Dortmund had several central train stations in or on the edge of the city center until it was nationalized. Of these, only today's main train station still exists in the same place.

There is also a large number of district train stations. Most of them were named after the respective district or their location in this district.

In addition, there is a train station outside of Dortmund, but its name refers to Dortmund.

In addition to the operated train stations and stops, there is also a smaller number of closed stations. Some of them have been replaced by passenger stations in the immediate vicinity. The two stops at Dortmund Hoesch and Dortmund Werkstätte have a special position. They were operating stations for the neighboring industries and businesses. Only people employed there were allowed to get on and off.

In connection with planning in the local rail network , several new stops have been under discussion for several years.

The Dortmund-Mengede train station in the north-west of the city is an exception. In addition to the RB43 line, the regional train lines open up the Dortmund urban area in the north, south and south-east. The Rhenish donkey was the only regional transport route that did not go through the main station until it was closed.
