There was a first settlement around 750 BC. BC (discovered during the construction of Autobahn 44 ).

Hemmerde is mentioned for the first time in a document around the year 880 in the property register of the Werden Abbey as villa Hamarithi in pago Borahtron (settlement in the Brukterer Gau ).

Around 1000 Hamerethi is mentioned in the arable land of the Freckenhorster Kanonissenstiftes . It is assumed that under the Counts of Arnsberg a first church , consecrated to the Apostle Bartholomäus , was built on the site of the present day Protestant church .

In 1023 the Steinen farmers belonging to Hemmerde were mentioned in a document when Emperor Heinrich II donated the predium Steini in Pago Westfalon to the Paderborn church. In the following, today's Schulze-Steinen farm is mentioned in 1030.

Around 1100 documents from the Werden Abbey name the farmers Sidinchusen (Siddinghausen).

In 1152, Widecho von Hemmerde was the first to name a noble family named after Hemmerde.

In 1210 the existence of a pastor is mentioned in Hemmerde.

The patronage of the church was transferred from Count Ludwig von Arnsberg to Count Eberhard I von der Mark on August 24, 1290 . Five days later he bequeathed it to Scheda Abbey .

Around 1300 the first land defense forces were established near Hemmerde.

In 1313 and 1319 the peasant communities Westhemmerde and Vyendick (Vinning), around 1383 also Drenhusen (Dreihausen) are mentioned.

In 1483, the Brunswick carver Conrad Borgentrik completed the St. Mary 's altar of today's Protestant church.

In 1570 the Reformation reached Hemmerde, and Vicar Johann zur Westen converted to Lutheranism with a large part of the community .

After disputes between the Catholic and Protestant parishes, a Catholic chapel is built in 1737 after a settlement.

In 1761 fighting broke out in the Hemmerde area during the Seven Years' War . The village is temporarily occupied by the French and temporarily by the Allies.

On April 6, 1823 the foundation stone for the construction of the Catholic Church is laid.

From 1841 Hemmerde belongs to the Unna-Kamen office .

In 1852 construction work began on the Dortmund - Soest railway line . Hemmerde received a train station in 1874.

In 1868 the badly damaged St. Mary's altar was removed from the Protestant church and sold. It is now in the Braunschweig Municipal Museum.

During the Second World War , the Catholic Church and several other buildings are destroyed (March 1945).

In 1962 Hemmerde received a coat of arms based on the Johann von Drenhusen seal from 1383.

On January 1, 1968, the community was incorporated into the city of Unna.

In addition to the former municipality of Hemmerde, the former municipalities of Westhemmerde and Siddinghausen also belong to the village of Hemmerde within the city of Unna .
