Individual evidence

  1. Place-name endings with -um (e.g. Bochum, Beckum, Stockum, from Latin teloneum = customs) and -heim (e.g. Nordheim, Dahlheim, Hildesheim, Mühlheim, Buchenheim) were typical for fiscal start-ups on major highways, which emerged after the Frankish conquest in the early Middle Ages (Battle of the Süntel 782 AD). They were not large and were located directly on the highways at that time , in order to collect tolls there ( Jürgen Udolph , Center for Name Research Göttingen). For place-name endings see customs (duty) .
