history
First mention
The place was first mentioned in 1174 as Ruinede Rodhe in connection with a transfer of tithe by the Severinstift to Vogt Engelbert von Berg .
From the end of the 13th century to 1806 Ründeroth belonged to the imperial rule Gimborn-Neustadt and was a border town in the triangle between the Duchy of Berg (Engelskirchen) and the imperial rule of Homburg (Drabenderhöhe). The Aggerfurt of the medieval Zeithstraße long-distance trade route from Siegburg to Dortmund was in Ründeroth . Ründeroth was temporarily recognized as a climatic health resort .
coat of arms
The coat of arms of Ründeroth is not historical. It was awarded in 1935 by the Upper President of the Rhine Province (design by a Dr. Baumeister , Cologne). The design originally contained the mountain lion as a heraldic animal. But the lion was not approved because, in the opinion of the State Archives in Berlin, it was already represented too often in coats of arms. The bird griffin was recommended as a replacement . And so it happened, although the heraldic animal has no historical connection to Ründeroth.
The colors of the coat of arms are red, gold and silver. A golden bird griffin stands upright in the red shield, holding silver fresh tongs (large gripping tongs for forging steel) in its front paws. In the base of the shield stands the coat of arms of the county of Mark in gold with the crossbars nested in red and silver.
Municipal reorganization
On July 1, 1969, Ründeroth was enlarged to include parts of the neighboring communities of Bielstein and Gummersbach. On January 1, 1975, as a result of the local reorganization in accordance with Section 13 (1) of the Cologne Act, the previously independent communities of Engelskirchen and Ründeroth were merged to form the new community of Engelskirchen.
