history
The station was opened in 1884 as part of the construction of the railway line from Siegburg to Ründeroth . It was a single-track railway with full gauge track. Overath station became a service point III. Class. The railway system belonged to the Engelskirchen Railway Maintenance Department until 1910 . With the opening of the section from Overath to Cologne on July 31, 1910, the station became a second class main service with a station inspector as administrator. The station was expanded to six tracks and a second, covered platform was created. In addition, the signal boxes OW and OO were built, a water tower and a railway barrier were built. The station building and a goods shed were expanded. The Overath railway maintenance depot, formed in 1910, existed until the railway line to Siegburg was closed.
Towards the end of the Second World War , the station facilities were badly damaged by bombs and grenades. Rail traffic to Siegburg was resumed on May 20, 1946; a train service between Overath and Cologne was possible again from May 15, 1949. Rail traffic to Siegburg was discontinued in spring 1961; the railroad tracks from Overath to Lohmar were dismantled in late autumn 1961. In 1962 the railway facilities for railway operations and shunting services were modernized.
From 1990 to May 2004, one of the five electronic test interlockings from Siemens was in Overath . These ESTWs were the first full-line ESTWs in Germany.
Renovation between 2014 and 2016
From June 2014 to July 2016, the train station and bus station were rebuilt. Before that, a nine-meter high pedestrian bridge was built over the railroad tracks. It was designed at this height so that the station is prepared for possible future electrification of the line.
As part of the construction work, the platforms were lengthened and increased to 76 centimeters for level access. The underpass to the platforms was shortened from 43.5 meters to 24.5 meters and redesigned to be barrier-free. This includes a guidance system for the blind . During the renovation, the central platforms could only be reached via the pedestrian bridge.
