Cusuco National Park

The Cusuco National Park (Parque Nacional Cusuco) is a national park in Honduras .

The protected area in the Department of Cortés with a total area of ​​222.23 square kilometers, a 7,690 hectare core zone and a 15,750 hectare buffer zone was declared IUCN Category II National Park by Legislative Decree # 87-87 in 1987 by the Parliament of Honduras . Cusuco encompasses several important habitats, including semi-arid pine forests at altitudes above 1,500 meters.

The Cusuco National Park is located in the Sierra del Merendón about 30 kilometers west of the city of San Pedro Sula on the border with Guatemala in a cloud and cloud forest region at an altitude of 1500 to 2450 meters above sea level. The area has a high amount of precipitation, the annual average temperature is around 19 ° Celsius.

The park is open to visitors, there are designated campsites, hiking trails that allow visitors to the waterfalls and towers to watch birds and wildlife. The national park is home to a wide variety of species including toucans , monkeys, tapirs, pumas, quetzals, and a large number of species of insects and beetles. The giant ferns ( Helechos ) with a height of over 20 meters are the main attraction of the park.
