Sierra del Merendón

The Sierra del Merendón is a mountain range that runs west to east along the border of Guatemala and Honduras .

The west side is bounded by the Río Lempa . Throughout history, the mountain range with different names was referred to, such as in ocotepeque department as Montaña de Pacaya , in Puerto Cortés as Sierra de Omoa and San Pedro Sula as Montaña El Merendon .

This mountain range has a wide variety of habitats and is often covered in clouds. The area has a high amount of precipitation, the annual average temperature is around 19 ° Celsius. The defining biome are the cloud and cloud forests .

The most important surveys are:

  • Pico Sumpul, 2,730 m
  • Pico San Ildefonso, 2,242 m
  • Erapuca, 2,380 m and the
  • Cerro Azul at 2,285 meters above sea level.

On the Honduran side is the Cusuco National Park .
