Nikolaus Amrhein

Nikolaus Amrhein (born November 12, 1942 in Ründeroth ) is a German plant physiologist and botanist. From 1987 until his retirement in 2008 he was full professor for biochemistry and physiology of plants at the Institute for Plant Sciences at ETH Zurich .

Life

Nikolaus Amrhein studied botany , zoology and biochemistry at the University of Munich and wrote his doctoral thesis there in 1969 with Meinhart H. Zenk at the Botanical Institute. After a two-year stay as a research associate at the MSU / AEC Plant Research Laboratory in East Lansing , Michigan , USA , he became a scientific assistant at the chair for plant physiology at the Ruhr University in Bochum , completed his habilitation in botany in 1974 and became scientific advisor and professor for in 1976 Appointed hormonal physiology of plants. In 1980 he took over the chair for plant physiology at the Ruhr University and was dean of the Faculty of Biology from 1984 to 1987 . In 1987 he was appointed professor of plant sciences at the ETH Zurich. In 1991 he was elected a member of the Leopoldina . From 1992 to 1996 he was head of the Department of Biology. He has been a full member of the Academia Europaea since 1992 . In 2012 he was elected a corresponding member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences .

Research work

His research focuses on metabolic processes in plants, in particular the biosynthesis of aromatic amino acids and phenylpropanoid compounds and the enzymes involved . He is managing editor of the journal Plant Cell Reports , member of the research council of the Swiss National Science Foundation and elected member of various academies and scientific societies.
