Life

Zenk studied chemistry in Erlangen and biology in Munich. He moved to the USA and in 1958 earned a master's degree in plant physiology from Purdue University in Lafayette (Indiana / USA). In 2006 he went to the USA, where he became a member and principal investigator at the Donald Danforth Plant Science Center in St. Louis.

He researched a broad spectrum of topics from plant physiology: he worked on the biosynthesis of dyes and terpenes in plants, on phytohormones and so-called phytochelatins , substances that bind heavy metals and thus detoxify plants. The focus of his research was the biosynthesis of alkaloids and, in the last years of his activity, the formation of morphine in mammals and in the human organism. He was the author of over 400 scientific publications that appeared in renowned journals. Zenk has been an elected member of the Leopoldina Academic Academy since 1983, of the National Academy of Sciences since 1992 and a corresponding member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences since 2000 .
