The Iserlohn-Letmathe train station is located in the Letmathe district of Iserlohn . With category 4, this station is rated higher than the Iserlohn city center station (category 6). Iserlohn-Letmathe is located on the Ruhr-Sieg route , the route towards Fröndenberg branches off here. The latter also connects to the Dechenhöhle , but has been out of service from Iserlohn since May 1989. In addition to passenger transport, freight transport is also handled.

Description of the station

location

Railway crossing east of the station

The station is located on the southern side of the Lenne , opposite Letmathe, in the Genna district . The Lenne, the valley of which is followed by the Ruhr-Sieg route, describes a wide arc ( inverted U ); the station area is roughly at the northernmost point, the railroad tracks run relatively straight from west-south-west to east-north-east.

environment

In the immediate vicinity, the Lenne is spanned by two pedestrian bridges and a bridge for general traffic, thus the train station is directly connected to the center of Letmathe. The station building is north of the tracks, to the north-east are car parking spaces ( Park & Ride ) and a bus stop. There is a level crossing directly to the east of the train station. Beyond the level crossing, the railway line branches off to Iserlohn to the east-northeast, while the Ruhr-Sieg line curves to the south-southeast.

construction

The station building is connected to the road network from the north via an access road. The main access to the tracks is through the building or outside on the east side.

The house platform 1 is the northernmost, directly at the station building. The central platform (2 and 3) can be reached through an underpass. To the south of the three passenger platforms are several tracks for cargo handling, in particular coils for the surrounding metal works. Loading onto trucks takes place in a hall adjacent to the south. There used to be more industrial tracks on the western track bed, most of which were dismantled.

history

The Ruhr-Sieg route was built in the 1850s from Hagen to the southeast. In 1860 Letmathe station was connected. In 1864 the line to Iserlohn was opened (later to Menden and Fröndenberg).

In 1975 Letmathe was incorporated into Iserlohn . After passenger traffic between Iserlohn and Hemer was discontinued in 1989, Iserlohn's inner-city train station lost its importance, and that of Letmathe grew:

Long-distance trains that went to Norddeich Mole , Frankfurt am Main or Munich also stopped here for decades . Partly through cars ran to Hagen, while the rest of the train reached the line to Hamm directly via a connecting curve and thus had the destination Münster - North Sea. This shunting work took place regularly in Letmathe. At the beginning of the 21st century only regional trains served Letmathe station; long-distance transport was given up in 2001 for the time being.

Letmathe station before the platform renovation

At this time the station building was falling into disrepair. From 2013 to 2015 it was rebuilt by an investor to turn it into a residential project for disabled people. In the period from 2015 to 2017, platforms 2 and 3 with the underpass were renovated and elevators were built. In February 2017, after more than forty years, the incorporation was also completed with the signage. The station has since been called Iserlohn-Letmathe . Operationally, however, the name was still Letmathe until December 8, 2018 .

Use of the former station building

The Iserlohner Werkstätten have been operating a café and a kiosk in the station building under the name Bahnsteig 42 since April 2015, in which people with and without disabilities work together in a group. The operation also includes a connected beer garden, e-bike rental and an abellio customer center . In addition, the ground floor of the station building is home to the editorial team of caput , an international social report and lifestyle magazine from the Iserlohner Werkstätten, in which people with disabilities work. The historic station building is also the home of a group of apartments for ten adult people with disabilities (inpatient assisted living ).

Cultural events take place in the train station at irregular intervals.

Planning

In 2015, the Iserlohner Kreisanzeiger reported that Deutsche Bahn was planning to stop the new Intercity line 34 in Iserlohn-Letmathe from 2019 . At the beginning of 2019, Deutsche Bahn denied such plans. Although the intercity line over the Ruhr-Sieg route is actually planned, the time of implementation is still unclear and coordination with the partners in local transport is still ongoing. It is therefore still unclear whether the intercity trains will stop in Iserlohn-Letmathe.
