Coil ( English for coil ) or bundle is the name for a wound metal strip or metal wire . The English coil is sometimes used in German as a technical term for coil steel strip and steel wire coil as a raw product. Steel strip coils are a common form of transporting flat products made of metals and alloys between manufacturers and the processing industry (e.g. the automotive industry ). Some of the coils are painted using the coil coating process before further processing .

The coils produced in the rolling mill can weigh up to 45 tons . Depending on the order size, narrow strips, so-called rings or slit strips, can be made from a coil by slitting it lengthways , or thin and medium sheets by slitting it transversely . Highly productive forming systems process undivided strips in order to save time handling individual sheets.

Due to their heavy weight, they are usually transported by rail or barge . A semi-trailer is only suitable for coil transport to a limited extent, as the permissible total weight for road vehicles (e.g. 40 tonnes) must not be exceeded.

Coil has also found its way into philately as a technical term . Coil stamps are roll stamps, postage stamps that are usually produced in rolls of 500 or 1000 pieces. In medicine, expanding technical structures are referred to as coils, which unfold after being introduced into the body (for example in the lung tissue ).
