The Rudolfplatz underground station is a station of the Cologne city railway . The in the district center located underground station is 12 and 15 of the lines of Cologne Transport operated. It was opened in 1987 and has two tracks. Entry and exit are handled via side platforms. Above ground there are also transfer options to lines 1 and 7.
location
The underground station is below Rudolfplatz, the intersection of the Habsburgerring with Richard-Wagner-Straße and Aachener Straße . In the direction of the city, the two streets merge to form Hahnenstrasse. The Hahnentor , the western city gate of Cologne's medieval city wall, is located in the immediate vicinity above the station .
history
Due to its location at the city gate to Via Belgica , Rudolfplatz was of great importance for traffic in and to Cologne even before its creation. The first horse-drawn tram in Cologne ran here as early as 1877 . With the razing of the city wall and the construction of the Ringstrasse from 1881, today's square was created. It is named after the first Roman-German king of the House of Habsburg , Rudolf I.
In the tram network, Rudolfplatz has always been important as a junction connecting the routes along the Rings and Aachener Straße.
In the 1980s, a tunnel was built along the rings to create additional space on the surface. The tunnel and with it the Rudolfplatz underground station opened on October 31, 1987.
The above-ground stop in the course of Aachener Straße was rebuilt in 1995 to ensure barrier-free access to the new low-floor trams .
layout
The underground station comprises a platform level with a distribution level above. Stairs lead from the distribution level to the stops of the overground light rail lines. The platforms out of town are at Hahnentor on Aachener Strasse, those in town on Richard Wagner-Strasse. The KVB buses also stop at the same platforms. On the distribution level there are public toilets, a kiosk and a standing café.
The individual levels of the underground station are connected by escalators, fixed stairs and two elevators.
The entire station is tiled in color according to the Cologne standard of the time , although the design is a bit more complex compared to the older buildings. On the platform to the north there is a ceiling breakthrough into the distribution level. In this area the wall is mirrored and provided with a stylized city gate .
Advance payments
The platforms are 35 centimeters above the top of the rails, but the station is designed for operation with 90 centimeter high light rail vehicles. Therefore all escalators end at this height, the actual platform level is reached by three more steps. With the permanent conversion of the ring lines to low-floor operation, a platform raising is no longer planned.
The statics of the stop structure are prepared for a later crossing under by an east-west light rail , concrete structural preliminary work does not exist. The project has been controversial in terms of transport policy for decades and is not expected to be implemented in the medium term.
The Rudolfplatz underground station, like the neighboring Friesenplatz underground station , was built as a nuclear bunker during the Cold War .
