The Friesenplatz underground station is a station on lines 3, 4, 5, 12 and 15 of the Cologne city railway . It is a four-track underground tower station that connects two underground tunnels as a crossing station: the extension of the inner city tunnel towards Ehrenfeld and the ring tunnel , which runs in a half-ring on the left bank of the Rhine around Cologne city center (along the borders of the medieval city wall).
location
The underground station is located under the Friesenplatz of the same name , which actually consists of two squares: one in the west on Venloer Strasse and one in the east on Friesenstrasse. The Hohenzollernring lies between the two squares.
The Friesentor was located next to today's eastern subway station entrances on the Ringstrasse, at the level of the Friesenwall and Friesenstrasse, until 1882 . It was one of the castle gates in the medieval city wall of Cologne that opened the way to the northwest on the Roman road to Venlo . Underground lines 3 and 4 in the direction of Bocklemünd / Mengenich now run under this street .
history
The station with its underground tunnels was built and opened in two construction phases (1985 and 1987). Previously, the now underground routes were operated as tram lines. In 1985, the extension of the inner city tunnel from Gleisdreieck Appellhofplatz towards Neu-Ehrenfeld was opened with lines 3, 4 and 5. The route of line 5 from Friesenplatz via Appellhofplatz (armory) to the cathedral / main station , which was built in 1968, is the oldest tunnel in Cologne.
In 1987, the cross tunnels under the rings in the direction of Rudolfplatz and Ebertplatz , in which lines 12 and 15 operate today. Another two years later (1989) the tunnel towards Ehrenfeld was opened and the station entrances were rebuilt at ground level, using glass and steel instead of the usual concrete enclosures.
architecture
The underground station is designed as a tower station , where two underground lines intersect.
A distribution level has been created as the top underground floor. There are information points, public toilets, kiosks, stand-up cafes, shops, public telephones and both escalators and fixed stairs to all four platforms. The platforms of the extension of the inner city tunnel towards Neu-Ehrenfeld are laid out as the second underground floor. They currently consist of 2/3 high-floor platforms. Lines 3, 4 and 5 run there. The platforms of the ring tunnel are laid out on the third underground floor. They consist entirely of low-floor platforms, where lines 12 and 15 are currently running. The Friesenplatz underground station, like the neighboring Rudolfplatz underground station, was built as a nuclear bunker during the Cold War . The underground station has 24 escalators of different lengths.
