The Mülheim Wiener Platz underground station is an underground station located in the Mülheim district of Cologne , which is served by lines 13 and 18 of the Cologne transport company (KVB). It was opened in 1997 as part of the Mülheim tunnel. On the surface is the tram stop of the same name on line 4, and there are also transfer options to local and regional bus services.

The station is located in the Mülheim district directly under Wiener Platz . It is located between Frankfurter Straße and Clevischer Ring and on the eastern ramp of the Mülheimer Brücke .
history
The underground station was opened on June 1, 1997 in Mülheim with the stations Wiener Platz and Bahnhof Mülheim. The lines 13, 15 and 16 drove from the Mülheimer bridge directly into the subway. In the same year, the Mülheim passenger center was also reached, which was located on the mezzanine level of Wiener Platz. It was noteworthy that it was the first subway to be built using the so-called mining method with shield tunneling machines . Mining construction means that only a partial cross-section of the tunnel is solved, which is done by blasting, the so-called tee. The excavated material is transported away and the unsupported area secured, which was an unconventional method for underground construction at the time. It revolutionized tunneling at the time through the use of shield driving machines.

The underground station is designed as a through station with two levels. The distribution level is located on the upper level and is seamlessly connected to Wiener Platz. There is access to the platform, as well as shops and a KVB customer center. The platform, which is designed as a central platform, is located on the lower level . Another entrance is on Frankfurter Strasse or at the eastern end of Wiener Platz.
