Holweide ( Kölsch Hollwigg ) is a district on the right bank of the Rhine in Cologne in the Mülheim district .

location

Holweide borders in the east on Dellbrück , in the south on Merheim , in the west on Buchheim and Mülheim and in the north on Höhenhaus .

history

The name Holweide arose from the contraction of "Holler Weidt" and "An der hohlen Weide" over time. The place name Holweide was introduced in 1910 to summarize the old places Wichheim and Schweinheim an der Strunde and the younger settlements Schnellweide and Holweide on Bergisch-Gladbacher-Straße. In 1914 Holweide was incorporated into Cologne as part of the Merheim mayor.

In the hut 3

The first documentary mention from 1222 concerns the former knight's seat Burg Iddelsfeld, which still today consists of an estate and a mill (18th and 19th centuries). Buildings from the 17th to 19th centuries of the Isenburg castle, first mentioned in 1364, have also been preserved, while only small parts of the moated castle "Haus Schlagbaum" from the 16th century can be found. In the former village center of the Schweinheim district, there are still several historical houses, especially in the streets “In der Hütte” and “Schweinheimer Straße” (intersections with Kaspar-Düppes-Straße and Ferdinand-Stücker-Straße). In 1666 the towns of Schweinheim and Wichheim were wiped out by the plague, with the exception of seven survivors.

Good turnpike

In 1906 Holweide was connected to the suburban railway (line G) from Cologne via Thielenbruch in Cologne-Dellbrück to Bergisch Gladbach ; the successor lines 3 and 18 end in Thielenbruch.

In 1912 the citizens of Holweide founded the volunteer fire brigade. This foundation was preceded by a year of preparation under the management of the then municipal secretary of the Merheim mayor's office, David, together with Mr. Oskar Wolf (municipal building officer) and other citizens. At the beginning the fire brigade consisted of 36 members, today 21 women and men are active (as of 2007). In 1997, after a two-year construction period, the volunteer fire brigade inaugurated its new fire station. There has also been a youth fire brigade since 2007.

The parish church of St. Mary of the Assumption was built in clinker brick construction in 1926/27 ; it was completely renovated in 2001/2002. 2004 the merger of the cath. Parishes of St. Mariä Himmelfahrt and St. Anno to form the new municipality of Holweide. Until the 1970s there was a 2 m high statue of the Virgin Mary in the parish church of St. Mariae Himmelfahrt, which could be pulled up in the dome during services and on the holiday of St. Mariae Himmelfahrt (to represent the "Assumption" of Mary).

S-Bahn station Köln-Holweide

The Holweide S-Bahn stop on the suburb of Höhenhaus , on the S-Bahn line 11 from Düsseldorf via Cologne Central Station to Bergisch Gladbach, was set up as a result of a private initiative.

Increasing settlement activity after World War II favored the establishment of a bus line. In order to improve the development of Holweide, line 47 (now 157) was set up at the beginning of the summer timetable on June 9, 1969. This line connects the northern residential areas with the Stadtbahn and Merheim . Since October 1976 it has been extended with a connection to the S-Bahn line 11 ( S-Bahn stop Holweide ) opened in 1975 and to the comprehensive school in Cologne-Höhenhaus .

The old festival and fairground Holweide in Musäusstrasse was built on in 1995 with a large block of houses. This meant that the citizens of Holweid could no longer hold their annual craft and performance exhibition and the fair, which took place on Catholic holidays, also disappeared from the townscape. Since 1999, the Holweide Friends' Association has been trying to create a new central market square (on Bergisch Gladbacher Strasse, near the parish church of St. Mariä Himmelfahrt), which was inaugurated in 2008.

The number of residents has increased by around 2,000 since 1997 due to the development of two new development areas (Im Oberiddelsfeld and Holweider Heide / Ernst-Cassel-Strasse). But even before that, the main road leading through the town had a lasting impact on the population. The decisive factors here are the dividing intersection of the place, the heavy truck traffic and the lack of a bypass. The route originally planned for the latter provided for a connection to the A4 (Merheim), but was in fact prevented by the construction of the new construction area Im Oberiddelsfeld.

Catholic Church of St. Mary of the Assumption

The Catholic Church of the Assumption of Mary, Schnellweider Str. 4, was built between 1926 and 1927 according to plans by the architect Stephan Mattar (1875–1943) as the successor to an emergency church from the 19th century. Fairytale settlement

House in the fairytale settlement

The fairytale settlement is partly in the Holweider area (the other part is in Cologne-Dellbrück ) . It was built between 1922 and 1929 as part of the city's expansion on the right bank of the Rhine south of Bergisch Gladbacher Strasse. The architects were Manfred Faber (1879–1944, murdered in Auschwitz concentration camp ) and Wilhelm Riphahn . The entire settlement consists of 181 single-family houses, which were built on the former lands of the medieval Iddelsfeld manor and were intended for rent-purchase by its tenants. The name can be found in terms such as Siebenrabengasse or Drosselbartstraße , but is also intended to express the residential reform idea of "living like in a fairy tale". The settlement implemented ideals of the garden city movement coming from England , the aim of which was to create sufficient living space for working-class families with a garden in which the families could grow vegetables and keep small animals. The houses in the fairytale settlement are almost without exception a listed building .
