The Schweinheimer Mühle was a watermill in Cologne-Holweide on the Strunde .

history

In the years 1322 to 1324, departmental mills in Schweinheim of the Benedictine Abbey of Sankt Pantaleon in Cologne were first mentioned in a document. In 1582, the grinder Johann zu Schweinheim maintained the Schleifmühl zu Schweinem . It was converted into a full mill (fulling mill ) in 1647 and leased to the masters of the Cölner Wollenamtes in 1651. Around 1773 it was a grain and oil mill , in which a grain distillery was temporarily set up. For a long time it served as a forced mill for the residents in the area .

After the Franco-German War in 1870/71, a wrapping paper factory was built on the site of the Schweinheimer Mühle. As early as 1873, the mill was converted into a small factory, initially producing cardboard and later rolls of fly glue that hung in apartments and stables, making the plague of flies more tolerable for people and animals in the summer. A major fire destroyed the Schweinheim mill in 1896, but it was rebuilt after a short time. The Martin brothers took over the business in 1900 and set up a cotton bleaching facility for the production of cotton wool . After 1905 the old undershot water wheel was replaced by an iron wheel . After the death of the two brothers towards the end of the First World War, the long-time employee Behrendt took over the management.

In 1934 the company went bankrupt and was taken over by the Swiss company SAPT (Societé Anonyme Pour Textile) as the main creditor. Then it was renamed in the Aryanized version Bast fiber GmbH . Machine gun belts were made from flax and hemp waste products during the Second World War . From 1950 the production was switched back to cotton wool and other dressing materials. The last active company, Cordier Spezialpapier GmbH , ceased operations in November 2009. The site has been deserted since then.
