As a grinding mill or Pleißmühle water- or wind-driven were mills which, at the grinding of materials or for sharpening served tools. Grinding mills incurred for cutting and grinding of stone or glass grinding and also for polishing of armor . A small grinding mill is called a grinding bowl or grinding bowl

history

The water mills, which have been widespread in Central Germany since the 12th century, were used with the industrialization that began in the second half of the 19th century to transmit power with the help of transmission belts. The older technical solution was power transmission through a so-called stick gear . This enabled stone saws and grinding wheels to be used.

The most frequent location of grinding mills was naturally on watercourses in a mountainous landscape. But windmills were also used as grinding mills if the location offered sufficient wind power.

Preserved grinding mills

A grinding mill with stick gear that still works as a show system is in Schwerin on the Faulen See . Here the grinding and cutting of stones is shown. The exhibition facility was reconstructed in 1985 based on historical models from the 18th century.

In Lauf an der Pegnitz there is the "Schleif", a still functional historical grinding mill. First mentioned in 1380 and in commercial use until 1988. Today it is shown at demonstrations in the company. Large whetstones are used to sharpen knives. Belt drives also transmit water power to drills and lathes.

A grinding mill designed as a windmill has been preserved with the scrubbing mill Jordhamn on Öland .
