Railway stations in North Rhine-Westphalia |
The Cologne West train station is located in the northwestern edge of Cologne city center in the Neustadt-Nord district on Venloer Straße . The station is a local transport system stop and is located on the Cologne railway ring (part of the left Rhine route ). The station has two platform tracks on a 210-meter-long central platform and eight platform-less tracks that are used for freight train traffic. The facade of the former reception building is a listed building.
history
Since the opening of the Cologne Central Station in 1859, its connection to the left Rhine route has led along the inside of the city wall in the area of today's rings. When the city wall was removed and the new town built in 1881, this also required a reorganization of the railway lines. On January 9, 1883, the city council decided to relocate the railway line to an embankment that was further from the center than before. This dam led on the inside of the new inner fortress belt along the Neustadt, with underpasses being built on all exit roads. Along the new line, built under the direction of Ernst Dircksen , two train stations were built: Cologne West (spelling until 1914: Cologne West ) and Cologne South . Both stations opened in 1891. The facade of the reception building largely corresponded to the appearance that has been preserved to this day, but there was a platform hall on the embankment that spanned the passenger train and the platform with the waiting room.
stretch
The passenger tracks separate from each other immediately north of the station. While the direction track leading northwards is led directly to Cologne Hbf, the direction track leading south bypasses the depot to the north in a large curve, which results in a route length that is almost 500 meters longer. The freight train tracks separate at the north head of Cologne West at the same level as the lines to Cologne-Ehrenfeld and on to the high-speed line Cologne - Aachen and to Cologne-Nippes and further as the left-hand Lower Rhine line . In addition, the so-called Schlundgleis branches off the freight tracks and leads over the site of the dismantled Cologne Gereon freight station through several underpasses to the depot.
Furnishing
New LC - destination displays are available since the fall of 2007. There are two elevators on the platform, both of which lead to Venloer Straße and the platforms of the tram stop.
The station was extensively renovated and modernized as part of the “Modernization Offensive 2” of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia . The central platform south of Venloer Strasse was rebuilt on tracks 1 and 2 over a length of 210 meters. The platform was raised to 76 cm to enable barrier-free entry and exit. Until then, the platform was only 38 centimeters high. In addition, the platform roof was rebuilt over a length of 42 meters. The access via the platform was redesigned, and lighting, speakers, showcases, seats and waste bins were also replaced. Another construction phase, for which the railway has not yet given a date, is to include an additional staircase to shorten the route as part of the bridge renovation over Venloer Straße. The new platform to the south of the station replaces the old platform, which, however, was not dismantled. Metal fences were built to block the access to the old platform from the public.
Hans-Böckler-Platz underground station / Bf. west
The Hans-Böckler-Platz / Bf stop is at a right angle under the Köln West train station . West of the Cologne Stadtbahn , which is served by lines 3, 4 and 5. In addition to stair access from the forecourt, the station is directly connected to the train station by two elevator shafts. At the western end of the stop, line 5 separates at no height from lines 3 and 4, with the switch in the direction of the city center still in the platform area. The still existing 30 cm platform sections previously served Line 5, but high-floor cars have been running on it since 2002, which is why only the 90 cm platform sections are used. Since almost all the stops in the direction of the city center have now been converted to elevated platforms, passenger operation with low-floor trains is no longer possible today.
