history

At the beginning of the 12th century, Emperor Heinrich IV. Assigned goods in Hirzenach to the Benedictine Abbey of St. Michael in Siegburg with the order to found a monastery there. The donation was confirmed in 1109 by Pope Paschal II . A testimony of the then incurred provost is the Built in the early 12th century Romanesque pillar basilica of St. Bartholomew . Around 1250 the original choir was replaced by the early Gothic choir that still exists today . The provost's office existed until its secularization in 1802. The church has served as a parish church since then . The parish house , which is also the seat of the SOLWODI association founded by Lea Ackermann , became the priest's residential building . The Baroque- style Propsteigarten from the early 18th century is considered to be of significant garden history and is part of the route of the World Heritage Gardens in the Upper Middle Rhine Valley.

In 1900 the place received a stop on the left Rhine route .

The previously independent municipalities of Niederhirzenbach and Oberhirzenbach were merged in 1924 to form the municipality of Hirzenach.

In 1936, the Hirzenach-Oberkestert Rhine overhead line crossing was built about one kilometer southeast of the town . It is the only overhead line crossing of the Rhine between Bingen and Koblenz and ends in the Oberkestert area on the right bank of the Rhine.

On December 31, 1975 Hirzenach was incorporated into the new municipality of Boppard.

Like other places in the Middle Rhine Valley, Hirzenach has to cope with a strong decline in population, from the peak in 1950 with 670 inhabitants, the number of inhabitants has now fallen below 300. In addition, there are the effects of demographic change, so only 9.7% of the population belong to the group of the under 20 year olds, while 43.1% belong to the group of the over 60 year olds.

The local advisory council in Hirzenach consists of five honorary council members, who were last elected in the local elections on May 26, 2019 , and the also honorary mayor as chairman. The local elections in 2019 brought three seats for the CDU and two for the SPD .
