history

There are many places called hamlets . It used to be called “Wilre”, as old documents suggest.

Weiler was first mentioned in a document in 911. King Konrad I had given the Ursulakloster in Cologne from the Bopparder Königsgut the Martinskapelle with yard and barn, from Salzig Wald and meadows and from "Wilre" meadows.

In 991 hamlet belonged to the villages of the large parish of Boppard, which emperor Otto III. with all the chapels of the Boppard rulership and the associated tithe country was transferred to St. Martin's monastery in Worms .

In 1149 King Conrad III. the place "Wilre" with the farms "Beie" (Rheinbay), "Quintinache" (Quentin), "Prade" (Prath) and "Overkestert" (Oberkestert) under his protection.

For the next few centuries, Weiler was part of the Boppard Empire . When Boppard lost its imperial immediacy in 1327 and was pledged by King Henry VII to his brother, Archbishop Baldwin of Trier , Weiler also came to the electorate. It was not until the end of the 15th century that there was one last unsuccessful revolt against the rule of the Electorate of Trier .

Ziehlay view of Kestert

Ziehlay with "Praying Nun"

Viewpoint with a wooden figure erected there in 2006 (by Sigurd Bratzel ) as a praying nun . The Rheinburgenweg leads past there.

Until the middle of the 20th century, a grown rock with a view of the Rhine gave the impression of a praying nun. The following legend is related to this formation: During the Thirty Years War the nuns fled from the now defunct hamlet monastery from the approaching Swedish troops of Gustav Adolf . They didn't make it in time and were massacred; only sister Angelika managed to escape through a secret door, and she saved herself on the Ziehlay. There she prayed to the Holy Mother of God that she would protect her from her persecutors and let her quickly turn to stone. The Swedish soldiers who had followed her no longer found her, thought she had crashed, and descended to the Rhine. There they looked in horror into the face of the petrified Angelica with folded hands, crossed themselves and repented of their deeds.

Until it was blown up by a bomb during the Second World War, it served as a location for souvenir photos on many occasions. It was also a popular rock for climbing.

From here you have a direct view of Kestert and the “Hindenburghöhe” viewpoint on the opposite side of the Rhine, which is also the resting point of the continuous “ Rheinsteig ” hiking trail .

St. Peter Church

Entrance side of St Peter's Church

The St. Peter Church is a church built in the first half of the 13th century in Romanesque style, the main nave of which was later extended in Gothic form. The church was decorated with important sculptures. The statue of Peter dates from the 13th or 14th century, the early Gothic cross from the 15th century and the statue of Our Lady of Sorrows from the beginning of the 16th century. Most valuable was a seated Madonna in Romanesque style, which was sold to the Trier Diocesan Museum in 1908 . In 1903 the belfry was renewed. In 1952 and 1953 the church received a sacristy and was lengthened by six meters. In 1968 the sanctuary was adapted to the new liturgical guidelines with a celebration altar.
