Location of Holzfeld in Rhineland-Palatinate

Holzfeld is the southernmost of ten districts of the non-association town of Boppard in the Rhein-Hunsrück district . The place invites you to go hiking because of its wooded surroundings. This is underlined by the recently created “Rhein-Burgen-Wanderweg”.

In Holzfeld you will find a part-time farm that cultivates the surrounding fields. The landscape is also characterized by orchards, most of which are privately maintained.

Until it was incorporated into the new municipality of Boppard on December 31, 1975, Holzfeld was an independent municipality.

The westernmost branch of the Rhine island Ehrenthaler Werth also belongs to the district .

history

The name of the place comes from Middle High German: neck = continuous narrow height. Thus the name Holzfeld is derived from the geographical location.

The first mentions go back to the year 1369, but the founding is estimated to be a few years earlier. At first, Holzfeld belonged to the Ehrenburg rulership, but it soon fell under the administration of the Electoral Palatinate. It later switched between French and Prussian rule. In 1948 Holzfeld was incorporated into the St. Goar district and in the meantime belonged to the St. Goar Association (1969) and the Boppard Association (1970). Since 1975 Holzfeld has belonged to the city of Boppard with 9 other former communities .

On a hill in the north-western part of the village center stands the Protestant church from the 16th century with a medieval tower, formerly a protective and defensive church, formerly provided with a high wall. It is one of the few still preserved fortified churches in the district. Inside there is a hexagonal font made of basalt lava from the pre-Gothic period.

Mining

A copper and zinc mine was supposed to start between Holzfeld and Boxberg as early as 1764. However, this failed due to disputes over competence. It was not until 1867 that the "Carlsgrube" started operations. The main resource here was lead. The depth of the individual mine shafts was well over 500 meters. A shaft even ran below the Rhine; it served as a connection route to other mining pits on the right bank of the Rhine. During the war, the pits were often used as protection against air raids. Mining in Holzfeld was stopped shortly after the war. The remains of the mining huts can still be found in the surrounding forest.

World Heritage Middle Rhine Valley

Since 2002, Holzfeld, as a district of the city of Boppard, has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site for the Upper Middle Rhine Valley .

The local council in Holzfeld consists of five honorary council members, who were last elected in the local elections on May 26, 2019 , and the also honorary mayor as chairman. The local elections in 2019 brought three seats for the citizens of Boppard and two for the SPD .

The mayor is Johannes Link (citizen for Boppard). In the local elections on May 26, 2019, he prevailed against the previous incumbent Werner Karbach (SPD) with a share of 54.5% of the vote.

Facilities

The central facility for village life is the village community center, which was almost entirely built in 1984 with personal contributions. It houses a large hall with a stage for events and clubs, a small kitchen, the premises of the youth club, the fire station and a community garage. Right next door is the playground, where the village school used to be.

Sports club Victoria 1923 Holzfeld

On the one hand there is the sports club (SV Victoria 1923 Holzfeld eV). It offers a variety of opportunities to do sports. Mention should be made: table tennis, soccer, gymnastics, etc. v. m. Since 2003 the sports club has organized the “Holzfelder Kulleslauf” in connection with the annual sports and forest festival.

The Kulleslauf (main run) is regarded by the participants as a very demanding 10 km route. Due to the constant mountain and valley sections of the route and the change between asphalt and forest paths, the strength of the athletes is heavily used.

Traffic and beautification association Holzfeld

The Holzfeld Transport and Improvement Association (VVV) ensures that the place looks beautiful all year round. These include B. the repair of the forest paths and the care of community flower beds. In 2006 the VVV celebrated its 40th anniversary.

Association of the volunteer fire brigade Holzfeld

There is also the “Friends of the Holzfeld Volunteer Fire Brigade”, whose membership is a quarter of the population. His goal is to give the local volunteer fire brigade the greatest possible support, in order to ensure, together with the city of Boppard as the fire brigade's carrier, that they are always fully operational.

In addition, the sponsoring association invites you to a cap meeting in the village community center once a year. In autumn 2004 the friends' association celebrated its 35th anniversary and in autumn 2019 its 50th anniversary.

The volunteer fire brigade Holzfeld organizes the children's fire brigade day , which has almost become a tradition, at regular intervals in cooperation with the friends' association. The firefighters show the children the correct behavior in the event of a fire.

Musikverein 1971 Holzfeld

Holzfeld is also fully represented musically, with the “Musikverein 1971 Holzfeld e. V. ". The association can be heard at festivals and concerts in the area. The music association organizes the fair, which has been held every year at the parish hall since 1995.

The traditional tasks of the music club in the village include: a. the musical participation in the honoring of the dead on the day of national mourning, the St. Martin parade and the pre-Christmas music making in the village center.

Holzfeld was awarded the silver medal in the “ Our village should become more beautiful ” competition in the special class at state level and was the winner of the “Ecological Services of the Community” competition.
