The Poststraße underground station is the southern end of the inner city tunnel of the Cologne light rail . Like the other two underground stations on the inner-city route, the station is oriented north-south and has two side platforms. Lines 3, 4, 16 and 18 serve Poststraße all day on weekdays with 30 trains per hour and direction, making the route one of the busiest tunnel routes in Germany. In relation to the number of passengers on the route, however, the number of people getting on and off is small.

Location in the inner city tunnel

Immediately to the south of the underground station there is an underground track triangle, which, unlike its northern counterpart on Appellhofplatz, is completely at the same height . To the southwest, the route joins the Rothgerberbach - Neue Weyerstrasse street and comes to the surface via a temporary ramp at Barbarossaplatz. The south-eastern branch of the route follows the Perlengraben and comes to the surface at the level of the north-south route , where it follows the course of the road to the Severinsbrücke in the middle . The cross connection between the two branches of the route is single-track and is not used in regular services.

history

The north-south route, known today as the inner city tunnel , was the second construction phase of the city of Cologne's sub-paving tram project, also known as the “inner city H” . While the north-east-west connection Friesenplatz – Appellhofplatz– cathedral / main train station opened in 1968 essentially replaced an existing above-ground branch line, the north-south connection Appellhofplatz– Neumarkt –Poststraße was the first real Cologne new line after the war. Since the construction was financed by the city of Cologne without any subsidies and there was no experience with the acceptance of new underground lines, the construction was carried out very sparingly. In addition to tight curve radii and branches at the same height, this also meant very narrow platforms. This particularly affected the Poststrasse station, for which hardly any passenger potential was expected as it was in a purely residential area and relatively close to the Neumarkt station. An initially planned platform at the cross connection Barbarossaplatz – Severinsbrücke analogous to the Appellhofplatz / Zeughaus station at the northern end of the new line was discarded for this reason.

When it opened in October 1969, the line from Neumarkt only led to Barbarossaplatz, the connection to Severinsbrücke was only opened a year later. In the following period, the underground station remained largely unchanged, with the exception of the retrofitting of elevators at the northern ends of the platform, conversions were limited to cosmetic changes.

After the network changeover in December 2003 no longer drove trams through the inner city tunnel, it became possible to equip the stops with elevated platforms. While the heavily frequented Neumarkt and Dom / Hbf stations were rebuilt in 2004 and 2005, the rebuilding of Poststrasse was not a priority.

Due to construction work on the north-south light rail , rail traffic at the Breslauer Platz / Hauptbahnhof underground station was interrupted for ten months in 2006/2007 . During the preparations, it was decided at short notice to use the one-week closure of the inner city tunnel, which was necessary to set up the temporary arrangements, in order to raise the flat platforms at Appellhofplatz and Poststrasse. First, the wall tiles and ceiling coverings were removed, while the line was closed in October 2006, the previous platforms were removed and replaced with precast concrete parts. In winter 2007 the rest of the work was carried out. Since then, the station has looked significantly brighter, in addition to new wall cladding and flooring, the lighting has also been replaced.

After a long renovation, the stop has been barrier-free again since the end of 2016.
