The Severinsbrücke , opened in 1959, was the first completely new bridge in Cologne after the Second World War . The cable-stayed bridge connects the Severinsviertel over the Rhine and the Rheinauhafen with the Cologne-Deutz district on the right bank of the Rhine as well as inner-city traffic with the ring roads on the right bank of the Rhine (first Gotenring) and long-distance roads, especially the B 55 and A 59 . The tram lines 3 and 4 have a special track with the two-sided stops Severinstraße and Suevenstraße.

The general transport plan adopted by the city in 1956 envisaged two new bridges over the Rhine to be built , building on the plans for the north-south breakthrough that had begun before the war, today's north-south route . The Severinsbrücke was the first new bridge location after the reconstruction or new construction of five Cologne Rhine bridges. An accident happened during the construction work on September 21, 1956, when the caisson for the foundation of the bridge pillar got into a tilted position and at least five workers were fatally injured.

The bridge was built from 1958/1959 according to the plans of Gutehoffnungshütte and the Cologne bridge-building architect Gerd Lohmer , which had been modified based on the suggestions of the renowned bridge-building engineer Fritz Leonhardt . On November 7, 1959, it was inaugurated in the presence of Federal Chancellor Konrad Adenauer . The special thing about the bridge is that it only needs one asymmetrically positioned A-shaped pylon , from which the bridge body is suspended with steel cables. Only in this way did the Deutz harbor remain usable for coasters . In addition, the pylon near the right bank left the view of the cathedral and the old town on the left bank of the Rhine largely undisturbed. Like the other urban bridges, it is painted in the Cologne bridge green.

The Severinsbrücke is a cable-braced girder bridge 691 meters long and 29.50 meters wide. The largest span is 302 m long. The pylon protrudes 77.2 m above the bridge foundation. A total of 8,300 tons of steel were used. The construction costs amounted to 25.3 million Deutschmarks . When it opened, it was the cable-stayed bridge with the longest main span in the world and the first with an A-shaped pylon. The October Bridge , which was completed in 1979 and crosses the Sheksna in Cherepovets , Russia, has a similar structure , the construction of which is reminiscent of that of Severin 's Bridge .

Due to the special rigidity of the construction, trams could also drive over the bridge on grooved rails. Since the renovation in 1979/1980, the light rail vehicles from Neumarkt to Deutz / Messe have been running over the bridge on their own track. In 2014 it was decided to reinforce the Severins Bridge in the area of ​​the main girder boxes and in the pylon with hot-dip galvanized U-profiles. Since the reinforcements are not visible from the outside, the appearance of the bridge could be preserved.

The building received the Cologne Architecture Prize in 1967, not least because of its innovative construction .

In 2014 the Severinsbrücke was reinforced with hot-dip galvanized U-profiles.

The Severinsbrücke crosses - from west to east - the four-lane riverside road known as Holzmarkt, the Rheinau port, its customs port, called the river side development, the Rhine, the entrance to the Deutz port and Siegburger Strasse. The center distances of the corresponding openings are 49.11 + 89.13 + 47.81 + 301.67 + 150.68 + 52.46 m. The bridge is bounded by abutments clad with natural stone , which are bordered by spiral stairs. Longer ramp bridges connect on both sides to the respective driveways.

The bridge deck is 29.50 m wide between the railings and is divided into the track structure for the two light rail tracks, two lanes each as well as 2.25 m wide bike paths and 3.00 m wide sidewalks. Measured from outer edge to outer edge, the bridge deck is 30.10 m wide.

The superstructure consists of two steel, 3.20 m wide box girders , the height of which decreases from a maximum of 4.57 m to the abutments to 3.00 m. They are stiffened by transverse washers. Between the box girders there is an orthotropic plate with a central longitudinal rib and regular transverse ribs. The box girders are attached to the stay cables above the two main openings; They are supported by narrow, round pillars above the side openings.

For architectural reasons, the riveted pylon posts are framed by profiles and finished with a roof plate. They are 42.12 m apart on their foundation slab. In the side view of the bridge, the posts taper from 4.17 m to 3.36 m at the head of the pylon, while in the longitudinal view they widen from 3.72 m at the base to 4.60 m at the head of the pylon.

The 4 × 3 suspension cables have, unlike usual, a rectangular cross-section, which shows that they consist of 4, 12 or 16 fully locked ropes. With the outer, stronger suspension cables, the upper cables are anchored in the pylon head, while the lower cables are guided through the pylon head via a saddle bearing.

Art on the bridge

On March 22, 1997, an art installation by Cologne artist HA Schult made of neon lights was installed on the pylon of Severinsbrücke . This was a globe, which, however, was not massive, but only a filigree lattice construction according to the patterns of longitude and latitude, on which the aforementioned neon lights in the form of the continents in different colors were attached. In addition, a glowing red neon figure in a euphoric pose protruded from the location of Cologne on the globe.

The art installation planned for a few months was extended despite controversial public discussion. On October 15, 2000, the redesigned globe was flown in a helicopter from Severinsbrücke to its current location on the roof of the DEVK headquarters building on the left bank of the Rhine next to the Zoobrücke .
