José Cerviño Cerviño

José Cerviño Cerviño (born August 21, 1920 in Aldán , Spain , † April 18, 2012 in Vigo ) was the Roman Catholic Bishop of Tui-Vigo .

Life

José Cerviño Cerviño, the youngest of twelve children, studied philosophy at the seminary in Tui and Catholic theology in the seminary in Santiago de Compostela . He was ordained a priest on April 6, 1946 . He graduated from the Pontifical University of Salamanca with a degree in canon law .

In 1946/47 he was parish administrator in the parish of San Miguel dos Agros in Santiago de Compostela and chaplain of Catholic Action . Between 1949 and 1952 was editor of the magazine Ultreia . He was rector of the seminaries in Tui (1949–1953) and Santiago (1955–1968). From 1964 to 1968 he was a canon at the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela ; he also taught at the University of Santiago de Compostela .

Pope Paul VI appointed him on June 4, 1968 titular bishop of Benepota and auxiliary bishop in the Archdiocese of Santiago de Compostela . The Archbishop of Santiago de Compostela , Fernando Cardinal Quiroga y Palacios , donated him episcopal ordination on July 28, 1968 ; Co-consecrators were the auxiliary bishops Maximino Romero de Lema and José Guerra Campos from Madrid .

On November 8, 1976 he was by Paul VI. appointed Bishop of Tui-Vigo . On June 7, 1996, Pope John Paul II accepted his age-related resignation.

José Cerviño Cerviño was Chairman of the Commission for the Liturgy in Galician and Chairman of the Joint Commission for the Preservation of Monuments of the Church in Galicia. He was a member of the Commission for the Seminary (1968–1981), Welfare and Social Development (1975–1978) and Regulations (1978–1981, 1987–1996) of the Spanish Bishops' Conference (CEE). He was also a member of the Committee on Liturgy (1978–1981), Missions and Cooperation between Churches (1981–1990) and Cultural Heritage. From 1992 to 1975 he was a member of the Permanent Commission of the CEE.
