The Cologne-Chorweiler train station is a joint tunnel station of the Cologne S-Bahn and the Cologne Stadtbahn in the center of Cologne-Chorweiler . From the Deutsche Bahn the breakpoint is internally KKC called, the Cologne Transport use for their stop short name CHW .
History of origin
The history of the underground and suburban railway station and the railway lines on which it is located are closely linked to the development of the large Chorweiler housing estate. Both the S-Bahn line, a loop of the Cologne – Neuss railway line , and the light rail, as an extension of the tram line to Longerich , were built in the open as infrastructure measures before the actual start of construction. The staggered commissioning was based on the construction progress of the residential development: the tram line 9 at that time served Chorweiler from November 17, 1973, the S-Bahn line S11 went to Chorweiler from June 1, 1975 and was to Chorweiler Nord on May 22, 1977 extended.
investment
The station consists of a 210-meter-long hall with a slight curve, which is supported in the longitudinal direction by two rows of columns and has an entrance at both ends. On the west side is the side platform with the track for the S-Bahn trains going towards the city center. The significantly wider central platform is a combined platform with platform edges for the S-Bahn track leading to the north and for the light rail. To the east of the platform track of the light rail there is another, platform-free track that merges into the former turning loop . While the S-Bahn system has remained largely unchanged since it was commissioned, the tram station was rebuilt several times.
Conversions
At the inauguration, the Chorweiler underground station was served by line 9 (Chorweiler - Ebertplatz - Dom / Hauptbahnhof - Neumarkt - Severinsbrücke - Königsforst) with Duewag articulated trolleys. Incoming trains first drove through the turning loop, which is also located in the tunnel to the northeast of the platform, before they stopped at the platform. Since the system was already designed for high-floor light rail vehicles, the tram tracks had been raised with half a meter of additional gravel for operation with tram vehicles.
After the network changeover in 1994, line 18 (Chorweiler - Ebertplatz - Dom / Hauptbahnhof - Neumarkt - Klettenberg - Brühl - Bonn) with B-wagons to Chorweiler. As a result of the conversion, the tracks were lowered to the originally intended height and the turning loop, which is no longer required for the bidirectional vehicles, was cut at one end. Incoming trains now reach the stop on the rear track and change to the platform track in the middle of the station, where passengers can get off. After changing the direction of travel, the train pulls over the track change to the southern end of the platform, where it picks up new passengers.
With the network changeover in 2003, line 15 (Chorweiler - Ebertplatz - Friesenplatz - Ubierring) finally came to Chorweiler. This line initially also operated with B-cars, but was intended to be converted to low-floor light rail cars . In preparation for this conversion, the tram tracks in Chorweiler were once again graveled to their original height during the 2006 summer vacation. 15 has been a low-floor line since autumn 2006.
service
The S-Bahn station is served by the S11 line of the Cologne S-Bahn and, during rush hour in the morning and afternoon, by the S6 line of the Rhein-Ruhr S-Bahn . Tram line 15 of the Kölner Verkehrsbetriebe (KVB) ends in the underground station .
