Seeberg is a district in the north of Cologne on the left bank of the Rhine , in the borough of Chorweiler .
geography
Seeberg is bordered by the B 9 in the east and the A 1 in the south . To the west, Seeberg borders the Heimersdorf district and to the north the district merges directly into the Chorweiler district .
District structure
Seeberg consists of three districts with different characters, which are separated from each other by a spacious park.
Alt-Seeberg
Alt-Seeberg is the oldest part of Seeberg - it was built in the late 1950s. In the post-war period, mainly new settlers found specially promoted opportunities for self-sufficiency on large properties. In the course of the expansion of the "New City", from the 1970s to the 2000s, the face of this settlement area changed completely towards the redistribution of most of the properties with new buildings and completely renovated old buildings. Structurally assigned to the Seeberg district, the site largely corresponds to that of the neighboring Heimersdorf district.
With a few exceptions, it is purely a single-family housing estate, on the edge of which there is a modern garden center - the Seeberger-Pflanzenhof, which has also gained national importance thanks to its range.
Seeberg-South
In the mid-1960s, Seeberg-Süd was built as a further addition to the “New City”. This quarter consists mainly of single-family houses that were built in the bungalow style that was common at the time . There are also several multi-storey buildings with rental apartments. In the western border area of this district there is an elongated park that connects Seeberg-Süd with the local areas Heimersdorf, Seeberg-Nord and Chorweiler.
The Oranjehof, a nationally known equestrian center and the spacious leisure facility Fühlinger See are only a few steps beyond the eastern boundary of the district . Every year there are large numbers of those seeking relaxation in this area, as well as many recreational athletes. International rowing regattas and music festivals ( Summerjam ) also take place there.
In Seeberg-Süd, a smaller commercial area primarily offers offers from the craft sector. A Catholic primary school supplements educational offers in the primary sector. Another park connects the Seeberg areas south and north.
Seeberg-North
Seeberg-Nord was built in the 1970s. This quarter borders directly on Chorweiler, the Willi-Suth-Allee and the Merianstraße are formally considered the border between the two parts of the city. A horseshoe-shaped band of high-rise buildings surrounds a park that is open to the south. Single-family houses were built between the skyscrapers and the park.
In the south-west of Seeberg-Nord the results of an architecture competition can be seen in which well-known architects were able to exemplarily realize their ideas of modern urban planning at the end of the 1960s.
history
The name of the district arose from the proximity to the Fühlinger See , from which the place is only separated by a small wooded area and the B 9. The second part of the name, Berg, is reminiscent of the Stallagsberg , a small elevation west of the district, but which was dredged away in the course of gravel mining in the area of today's Fühlinger See. The hill along the B 9 is an artificial embankment that was created at the beginning of the 1970s to protect against noise. It is not about the lake mountain , as is often mistakenly assumed. The Cologne city council approved the new name Seeberg on April 30, 1964.
Seeberg is the southern part of the “New City in the North of Cologne” designed by Konrad Adenauer and the urban planner Fritz Schumacher . Because the New City was built from south to north, Seeberg is the oldest part of the satellite town .

buildings
- The Oranjehof is located on the other side of the Neusser Landstrasse (B 9), which borders the Seeberg district . This is the manor house of a former courtyard from the 18th century. The barns and stables have given way to the facilities of the Oranjehof riding club since 1965 . There is a tennis hall to the north.
Since the Neusser Landstrasse forms the border of Seeberg to the east, the Oranjehof is actually in the area of the Fühlingen district , but it is about 2.5 kilometers to the town of Fühlingen.

In Heimer village near the Mercatorstraße and adjoining Seeberg North Chorweiler is a respective stop for the rail (line 15). The S-Bahn line 11 also runs in Chorweiler.
