The Fühlinger See is a multi-part artificial lake on the northern outskirts of Cologne-Fühlingen .

location

The Fühlinger lake covers an area of 100 hectares and is bordered to the east by the development and spare parts center of Ford -Werke and the industrial area Feldkassel , in the south on the A1 , on the west by Cologne-Seeberg and Cologne-Chorweiler and the north by the eponymous place Cologne-Fühlingen. Riding trails are laid out around the entire lake area. To the south-west (Oranjehofstrasse / Neusser Landstrasse) is the Oranjehof riding club.

The sea

From 1912 gravel was dredged in the Fühlinger Heide , which was used for the construction of the Cologne-Aachen and Cologne-Krefeld railway lines as well as for cement requirements in Cologne. The pits quickly filled with groundwater due to the nearby Rhine and the old subterranean arm of the Rhine. Bathers came to the north of Cologne as early as the 1930s, when the excavator was still in operation.

The local recreation area Fühlinger See was created from 1967 through the recultivation and unification of the old gravel pits in the course of the construction of the satellite town of Chorweiler. For them, the lake was to serve as a recreation area and separation lane from the industrial and commercial area planned to the east. It was also desired to use it as a regatta course for training and competition operations for the Cologne rowing clubs. The Fühlinger See consists of a large number of interconnected lakes . A total of seven lakes border a centrally located regatta course . The individual lakes are intended for different uses: a lake for outdoor swimming and scuba diving, a fishing lake, a surfing lake and three swimming and boating lakes and a rowing and canoeing lake for berthing and casting off with passage to the regatta course. The depth of the lake averages 10 m, in some places it reaches almost 20 meters.

The regatta course has a total length of 2300 m and is 130 m wide; it has a depth of up to 15 m. There are 6 lanes of 2000 m each. A seventh lane is used to access the start area. If there are no regattas on the regatta course, lanes 7, 6 and 5 may only be used in the start direction, while lanes 1, 2 and 3 may only be used in the destination direction. Lane 4 is closed for training. This regulation serves to avoid collisions and enables the training units to be carried out largely safely.

Since the lake is fed by groundwater and is less than 2 kilometers from the Rhine , the fluctuations in the water level are also dependent on the Rhine water level, i.e. H. Considerable for a lake without inflows and outflows: they are up to 2 m.

On hot summer weekends there are up to 80,000 people in and around the lake, which can be problematic for the water quality. In the summer of 1996, the waters had to be temporarily closed because the pollutant concentration exceeded specified limit values. The Fühlinger See outdoor pool was closed in 2007 by KölnBäder GmbH. The outdoor swimming pool, now Blackfoot Beach , has been privately operated by a company since 2009 and does not require any public subsidies.

According to the current statutes regarding the use of the Fühlinger See recreation facility of June 29, 1984, bathing is only permitted in the area in Lake 5, which is separated off as an outdoor pool. In fact, however, this ban is ignored by many.
