The Düsseldorf-Benrath stop is about 10 kilometers south of Düsseldorf Central Station in the Benrath district of Düsseldorf . It is located on the Cologne – Duisburg railway line and belongs to station category 3. In addition, the Düsseldorf-Benrath stop is one of the city's three regional transport stops and a stop for several bus lines as well as a tram and a light rail line. The station is used by around 13,000 travelers every day.
On January 23, 1998, the station was entered on the city's list of monuments in the Technical Monuments category .
history
In 1843 , the Prussian Ministry of Finance granted the Cologne-Minden Railway Company permission to build a railway line from Cologne via Düsseldorf to Minden . In order to finance this project, shares were offered for sale. Many Benrathers bought these shares on the assumption that Benrath would become a stop on this new line. On December 20, 1845, the first section between Deutz and Duisburg was opened and the "Benrather Bahnhof" (as it is also known colloquially, even if it was only a stopping point from an operational point of view) was inaugurated with a ceremony.
As early as 1907, over 250,000 passengers were handled in Benrath. The current station building dates from 1932 and replaced the building from the early days. The old building was demolished because the dimensions had become too small for the number of rail travelers. Furthermore, the entire railway line was expanded to four tracks and raised by two and a half meters in order to ensure cross-free traffic . In front of the main entrance there was a generously laid out rose circle .
On May 25, 1965, Queen Elisabeth II visited Benrath Palace . On the occasion of this visit, she was received by the then Prime Minister Franz Meyers at the festively decorated stop.
Todays situation
The stop is centrally located between the Düsseldorf districts of Benrath , Urdenbach and Garath . It is located in an elevated position above Hildener Straße , from where there is access via a tunnel. Furthermore, both platforms can be reached by elevators. There are parking spaces on both the western and eastern sides of the station .
The stop has two central platforms , each between two tracks of the Cologne – Duisburg railway line . Two Regional Express lines stop at the long-distance platform, while Intercity and Intercity Express travel through at 200 km / h.
The station building was deliberately placed at the end of the avenue - like Heubesstraße facing Benrath Castle . In this way, a corresponding visual relationship was made possible, which today is severely restricted by the bridges of Bundesstraße 8 , which are kept in the style of brutalism and almost completely occupy the former station forecourt . The massive, exposed concrete bridges and the area below, primarily used as a car park, create a less attractive urban structure at this point in the Benrath district .
This is not the only reason why the surroundings and the station itself are now considered a "problem child" among Düsseldorf stations.
offer
The breakpoint is every hour of the Regional Express operates -line RE1 and RE5, associated with the S6 in 20-minute clock , and also two light rail - six city buses and three overnight express -lines.
