Garath Castle is a property first mentioned in a document at the end of the 13th century in the Garath district of Düsseldorf of the same name .

history

Today it is assumed that the knight seat Garath already existed in the 9th century. This is where the von Garderode knights resided . However, the origins of Garath Castle are not exactly clear. At the end of the 14th century it belonged to the Knights of Kalkum. The name Garath Castle has only been in use since the 20th century, before people often referred to the Garath House . At Schloss Garath the reed Rather Bach and the lead Galkhauser Bach in the Garather Mühlebach .

The old castle was built between the 16th and 18th centuries at the behest of the von Velbrück family , as was the gate tower, the only part of the old castle still preserved today. The palace gardens were designed by Nicolas de Pigage , who was also the architect of Benrath Palace , in the 18th century . After the Counts of Velbrück, the Barons von Kylmann owned Garath Castle. The castle passed to the Barons Raitz von Frentz by marriage at the beginning of the 19th century . With the exception of the gate tower, the old castle was demolished at the beginning of the 20th century after Alhard von Burgsdorff , son-in-law of the industrialist Gustav Poensgen , had acquired the estate from Baron Raitz von Frentz. He then had today's Garath Castle built on the same site in 1912 and 1913 according to plans by the architect Max Wöhler . His son Alhard continued to run his father's "Garath chicken farm" on the property and made it known worldwide.

After the Second World War, British troops moved into the castle and it remained in the possession of the British government until the 1950s when the Federal Republic bought it and handed it over to the German Federal Post Office . On April 29, 1978, the city of Düsseldorf acquired Garath Castle from the Deutsche Bundespost for 1.3 million DM and used it mostly for cultural events. Today there is also a neo-baroque castle chapel in the castle park , built by the architect Max Wöhler. Today the castle is used commercially by a good dozen companies. It is for sale (2019).
