The Galkhauser Bach is a 9.8 kilometer long brook in the North Rhine-Westphalian cities of Leichlingen (Rhineland) , Langenfeld (Rhineland) and Düsseldorf .

Location and topography

The Galkhauser Bach rises in the Riedbachaue (also called Roßlenbruch ) south of the state road L 288 in the west of the city of Leichlingen (Rhineland) . As Riedbach , the floodplain flows in a south-westerly direction and crosses under the state road L 288 and the parallel federal motorway 3 , which is also the city limits of Langenfeld between L 403 (Bergische Landstraße) and L 291 (Solinger Straße) . As the "Hapelrather Bach" it flows through Hapelrath and crosses under the Troisdorf-Mülheim-Morsbroich-Opladen-Immigrath-Richrath-Speldorf railway , which was built in 1874 by the former Rheinische Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft , near the underpass of the connecting route from the "Alte Schulstrasse" to Furth. Remnants of a dry inflow from the direction of Leichlingen-Trompete can be found from the A3 along the edge of the forest parallel to "Trompeter Straße". In the west, however, this former backwater ends immediately in front of and three meters above the route of the railway line. His allegedly old bed only resumes this inflow from about the height of the crossing under the railway line . With its deepened, new brook bed, the Galkhauser Bach drains the southern areas of the Further Moor and restricts the core area of the moor to the northern part through which the Blockbach flows. At the level of Dückeburg , it also takes up a left tributary water, which presumably used to be used for drainage and thus the water regulation of the moats of the former moated castle . The former inlet to the moat, a small stream , has its origin in the village of Virneburg . A rectangular water basin in the forest behind the “Möckenburg” farm presumably once served to regulate the inflow to the ditches of the Dückeburg castle complex .

At the Rheinische Kliniken in the district of Galkhausen , the brook receives an inflow on the left from the Reusrath Bach , which is also called Locher Bach in the Locher Wiesen , and now flows in a north-westerly direction. Channeled, it flows under the federal motorway 542 to the west and changes again to a north-westerly direction after a tributary to the left. There it crosses the Langenfeld city center, takes the Blockbach from the right at the Hucklenbruch and disappears in a pipeline in the area of the Langenfeld market square (on the Ganspohl ). The street above the Galkhauser Bach, also known here as Ganspohler Bach, is called Bachstraße . In the piping, it first changes the direction of flow to the west, before the main northwest direction is taken again. In the western part of the Bachstraße , from the confluence of the Lilienthalweg , the brook is again above ground and for long stretches up to the city limits in a now natural ( renatured ) brook bed.

Between Theodor-Heuss-Straße and the Stadtbad it also takes up the Immigrather Bach , which has crossed the entire city center underground. From the equestrian center Gut Langfort, the Galkhauser Bach leaves inner-city areas and flows through parks and fields to the Düsseldorf city limits. Here the Galkhauser Bach also bears the name Langforter Bach . Shortly before the border, the Burbach flows in from the east , shortly behind it the Kaiser-Wilhelm-Graben . In the Garath district of Düsseldorf , the Galkhauser Bach finally flows into the Garath Mühlenbach at Garath Castle .
