Catherine Byrne (politician, around 1897)
Catherine Byrne (nee Fraser ; † 24. January 1994 in London ) was one of Edinburgh , Scotland native Irish politician . She was a member of the Dublin City Council since 1949 and held the office of Lord Mayor of Dublin from June 30, 1958 to June 1959 . With her election, she became the second woman to hold this office.
Catherine Byrne was married to Thomas Byrne († 1949). When he died, she moved to Dublin City Council for him. In 1958, she was the Fine Gael candidate for the office of Lord Mayor of Dublin. After four candidates, including James Carroll , were eliminated in the preliminary round, Robert Briscoe prevailed with 23 to 17 votes . In the mayor election on June 29, 1959, she did not run.
In the fall of 1967, the now 70-year-old left the city council, at which time she had been its only female member, and moved to London , where she lived with her daughters. She did not return to Dublin until September 1988, when the current Lord Mayor Ben Briscoe presented awards to his 17 surviving predecessors on the occasion of the city's millennium. Catherine Byrne was 91 years old at the time.
