life and work

As the son of a stonemason, he began studying at the École Militaire in Paris in 1743 and switched to the Académie royale d'architecture a year later , where he studied under Jacques-François Blondel . Elector Carl Theodor called him to the Palatinate court in Mannheim , where he was appointed chief building director in 1752.

Benrath Castle was built from 1755 to 1773 under the direction of Pigage . During the construction period, Nicolas de Pigage was appointed garden director of the Electoral Palatinate in 1762. Pigage was involved in the construction of the residence in Mannheim and the Schwetzingen palace gardens , where he also built the palace theater and expanded the nave of St. Pankratius . At Mannheim Castle he was commissioned to build the east wing.

Pigage is also the architect of the Karlstor in Heidelberg , the Speyerer Tor in Frankenthal (Palatinate) as well as an estate belonging to the care Schönau . He built a palace on the Zeil in Frankfurt am Main for the Electoral Palatinate banker Franz Maria Schweitzer .

Honors

The city of Mannheim named a street after him in the Rheinau district . In Düsseldorf-Benrath , too, a street was named after him in the immediate vicinity of the palace. The name of a street in Schwetzingen also reminds of the builder.

Worth knowing

The painter Werner von Pigage is a descendant of Nicolas de Pigage's brother, even if he liked to portray himself as his descendant.
