St. Antonius (Düsseldorf-Hassels)
The Catholic Church of St. Antonius in Düsseldorf-Hassels is one of the few church buildings that were completed during the Nazi regime. Particularly noteworthy are the church windows completed in 1944, one of which shows a Star of David .
history
The first chapel at the site of today's Antonius Church was in existence in the 1660s, and an emergency church since 1918. The construction of today's Antoniuskirche by the architect Hermann Schagen began in 1927. The originally planned portal tower was not implemented, instead a roof turret acts as a bell carrier.
The external appearance follows a clear geometry, as is typical of the 1920s. The round window above the portal also reflects the spirit of the 1920s.
The interior alludes to baroque furnishings. The roof is arched, the windows have a curved top, the ceiling arch surrounds them with round bays. On the side of the windows, columns are indicated, arches under the windows allude to what appears to be aisles and make the windows appear as cliff windows, even though it is a single-nave hall church.
Particularly noteworthy are the church windows completed by Wilhelm Schmitz-Steinkrüger in 1944 , which were only installed after the end of the war. They clearly refer to the Christian tradition including an Old Testament Jewish symbolism, which was very unusual under the conditions of Nazi rule. One window in particular contains the saying: “O King of Nations, you longing of the heathen, you cornerstone who unites all peoples, come bring salvation to the man you formed from earth”.
