Career

Fritz Gerdsmeier comes from a family of wrestlers from Aschaffenburg. His father Karl-Heinz Gerdsmeier was also a German wrestling champion, and brother Horst was a good middleweight wrestler. With a height of 1.90 meters, he wrestled as an adult in the heavyweight division, the weight class that had its weight limit of 100 kg at the time. Towards the end of his career, however, he switched to the super heavyweight, for which he was actually too light at around 108 kg. He always wrestled in the Greco-Roman style.

In 1979 he took second place in the German A youth championship (age group up to 18 years of age) in the weight class up to 87 kg behind Rainer Weber from Nuremberg . In 1980 he was German youth champion in the same weight class before Gottfried Rampf from Hallbergmoos . In the junior division, he won the title at a German heavyweight championship in 1982.

As a junior, Fritz Gerdsmeier took part in the Junior World Championship (Juniors) in Colorado Springs in 1980 and took 3rd place in the weight class up to 87 kg, behind Csaba Majoros from Yugoslavia and Franz Marx from Austria . At the Junior European Championships (Espoirs) in Leipzig in 1982 he succeeded in defeating Ioan Grigoraş from Romania , but after defeats against Sabew, Bulgaria , and against Csaba Majoros, he ultimately remained unplaced.

Fritz Gerdsmeier was very successful in the German senior championships. In 1982 he had to be content with fourth place in the heavyweight division, but from 1983 to 1986 he won the German heavyweight championship title four times in a row and from 1988 to 1990 the super heavyweight division. Only in 1987 he had to be content with the vice-championship title in heavyweight behind Roland-Pawel Cwik.

From 1984 Fritz Gerdsmeier also represented the German colors at several international championships. His first start was at the European Championships in 1984 in Jönköping , where he finished 7th in the heavyweight division after defeating the Italian Antonio Lapenna . At the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles , he came in 6th place. In 1988 he took part in the Olympic Games in Seoul for a second time. He started there in the super heavyweight division, but could not do anything against the physically superior László Klauz from Hungary and Tomas Johansson from Sweden and remained unplaced.

After the Olympic Games in 1988 he ended his international wrestling career.
