Thomas Horschel (born December 13, 1960 in Suhl ) is a former German wrestler . He was two-time vice European champion in the Greco-Roman heavyweight division for the GDR in 1984 and 1986.

Career

Thomas Horschel began as a teenager with rings and grew up in the GDR top club SC Motor Zella-Mehlis at an outstanding wrestler in the Greco-Roman style approach. In 1979 he first drew attention to himself when he took 2nd place at the light heavyweight wrestling championships of the GDR . One year later he was the first GDR champion in this weight class. He was then nominated for the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow . His participation there was his first start in an international championship. In Moscow, Thomas Horschel, not even 20 years old, reached an excellent 5th place in the light heavyweight division.

In 1981 he was only used at the European Championships in Gothenburg . After a bye in the first round he lost his next two fights against Petre Dicu from Romania and Uwe Sachs from Freiburg im Breisgau and ended up on 10th place. For his next start at an international championship, Horschel did not come back until 1983 at the world championship in Kiev . But he couldn't place himself there either and ended up in 8th place.

His breakthrough on the international wrestling mat came in 1984 when he was runner- up at the European Championships in Jönköping . On the way there he defeated u. a. the reigning world champion Andrej Dimitrov from Bulgaria and Roman Wrocławski from Poland, another very strong wrestler. In the final he lost to Tamás Gáspár from Hungary . Horschel was unable to take part in the Olympic Games in Los Angeles that year because of the boycott of these games by the socialist states.

In 1985 Thomas Horschel reached the 5th place with four wins at the European heavyweight championship in Leipzig . In the subsequent World Cup in Kolbotn , Norway , however, he could not take part because the GDR did not send wrestlers for economic reasons. At the 1986 European Championships in Athens , Horschel celebrated his second runner-up in the heavyweight division behind the Yugoslav Josef Tertelj .

In 1987 Thomas Horschel ended his career as a competitive athlete in the GDR, but struggled even further at the national level. After German reunification, he joined ASV Lampertheim in 1991 and was German runner-up in heavy and super heavyweight in 1991 and 1992.
