Keijo Johannes Manni (born April 3, 1951 in Peräseinäjoki , South Ostrobothnia ) is a former Finnish wrestler . In 1978 he was Vice European Champion in the Greco-Roman style in the light heavyweight division.

Career

Keijo Manni, who is a farmer, only started wrestling at the age of 16 at the Peräseinäjoen Toive sports club , to which he has been a member throughout his career. As an adult, he started at a height of 1.79 meters in the middleweight (up to 82 kg body weight (KG)), but grew in the course of his career over the light heavyweight (up to 90 kg body weight) to the heavyweight (up to 100 kg body weight) inside. He was a stocky, powerful wrestler who preferred the Greco-Roman style on the international wrestling mat, but also competed in free style in Finland.

Keijo Manni won his first Finnish championship in 1971 in Greco-Roman. Middleweight style. He won his last Finnish championship title in 1991. In these 20 years he won a total of 33 Finnish championship titles, 17 in Greco-Roman. Style and 16 in free style. He is the Finnish record holder in terms of the number of Finnish championship titles won and even surpassed the legendary Kustaa Pihlajamäki , who won a total of 32 Finnish championship titles in the 1920s and 1930s.

He appeared on the international wrestling stage for the first time in 1973. He took third place in Helsinki at the European Championships in the Greco-Roman style in the middleweight division with four victories and won a bronze medal at the same time.

Until 1981 he started regularly at the World and European Championships and was also at the start at the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal and 1980 in Moscow . In these years he only won one international medal. At the European Championships 1978 in Oslo he came to victories over such renowned wrestler like light heavyweight Georgios Pozidis , Greece , Darko Nišavić , Yugoslavia , Georgi Petkov , Bulgaria , Aslan Aslan , Turkey and Petre Dicu , Romania and losing to Frank Andersson from Sweden to the silver medal place.

At the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal , he finished both in Greco-Roman. Style as well as in the free style in light heavyweight each the 9th place, while he at the Olympic Games in Moscow in 1980 in Greco-Roman. Style took 12th place in the same weight class.

At the European Championships in Gothenburg in 1981 Keijo Manni missed the light heavyweight division, Greco-Roman. Style, with a fourth place just under a medal. With Franz Pietschmann from Austria and Atanas Komtschew from Bulgaria he defeated very strong wrestlers and only lost to Olympic champion Norbert Növényi from Hungary and Thomas Horschel from the GDR .

After a six-year break, Keijo Manni returned to the European Championships in Tampere in 1987 , where he achieved a good 6th place in the heavyweight division. He also started in the heavyweight division at the European Championships in Oulu in 1989 and reached 8th place. Finally, as a 43-year-old, he tried again at the World Championships in Tampere, remained there in the heavyweight division without a win and only came in 19th place.

Then he ended his wrestling career for good.
