Norbert Növényi

Norbert Növényi (born May 15, 1957 in Budapest ) is a former Hungarian wrestler . He was Olympic champion in 1980 in Greco-Roman. Style in the light heavyweight division .

Career

Norbert Növényi comes from a wrestling family, father Norbert Növényi sen. was the Hungarian heavyweight wrestling champion in the 1950s and began wrestling as a child in Budapest. He concentrated on the Greco-Roman style. In the junior sector, it has not yet played a role at international level. In 1979, however, he replaced the 1972 Olympic champion and multiple world champion Csaba Hegedarischens in Hungary as the Hungarian senior light heavyweight champion and this year he made his first appearances at international championships.

At the European Championships in Bucharest in 1979 , he was able to convince right away and became vice European champion with five wins. He was only subject to the exceptional Swedish athlete Frank Andersson . He also came in second at this year's World Cup in San Diego . In the final he was again defeated by Frank Andersson.

In 1980 he focused entirely on the Moscow Olympics . He made it into the final in the light heavyweight division with four wins and in this the almost impossible, namely a victory over the huge favorite Igor Kanygin from the USSR , who had turned off Frank Andersson. This made Norbert Növényi Olympic champion .

After this great victory, Norbert Növényi was no longer able to compete at the top of international championships. After all, he won at the world championship in Kiev in 1983 in the light heavyweight division behind Igor Kanygin and Atanas Komchev from Bulgaria again a world championship bronze medal .

From 1985 Norbert Növényi fought as a kickboxer and is said to have made it to two world championships here. He also went into the film business and worked even 1988 in Hollywood along with Arnold Schwarzenegger in a movie with.

In 1992, at the age of 35, he started a comeback as a wrestler, which was crowned with success that he won the title at the Hungarian heavyweight championship before the two-time vice world champion Sándor Major and thus qualified for the Olympic Games in Barcelona . In Barcelona he won three heavyweight fights, but then retired from Germany after a defeat by Andreas Steinbach and finished in 7th place.

After 1992 Norbert Növényi worked again as an actor, kick boxer and K1 fighter and was still active in this profession even as a 50-year-old.
