Claes Edvin Johansson (born November 4, 1884 in Hyssna , Mark , † March 9, 1949 in Gothenburg ) was a Swedish wrestler .

Career

Claes Johansson was one of the dominant Greco-Roman style wrestlers in the world in the period just before and just after World War I. He belonged to the Swedish sports club Örgryte IS and later moved to the AK (Athletic Club ) Göteborg . He won the Swedish championship eight times, in 1911 for the first time and in 1920 for the last time.

He was also very successful on an international level, although it should be noted that all championships, with the exception of the Olympic tournaments, were unofficial. They often differed greatly in the modes of delivery and in the weight classes.

Claes Johansson was middleweight at the Olympic Games in Stockholm in 1912 and light heavyweight Olympic champion at the Olympic Games in Antwerp in 1920 . At his third start at the Olympic Games, in 1924 in Paris , he had to pay tribute to his age, he was now 40 years old and only came 13th in the heavyweight division. In 1912 in London he prevailed over the Russian Martin Klein and the Finn Alfred Asikainen , who had both fought for over eleven hours. In 1920 he only needed four victories to win the Olympic gold due to new regulations. In the final, he beat Edil Rosenqvist from Finland just on points. In 1924 in Paris he was defeated in the second round by the completely unknown Frenchman Henri Deglane and had to retire. Deglane was the sensation of this tournament because he won his six fights and was Olympic champion ahead of Edil Rosenqvist and Raymund Badó from Hungary .

Claes also took part in the World Championships in 1913 in the Centennial Hall in Wroclaw , but did not come under the top three winners in the light heavyweight division, but ended up in 4th place. Victories from Claes Johansson over Alfred Lindblad from Sweden and the Breslau journeyman butcher Karl Paulini are documented from this tournament .

In 1913 he also started at the European Championships in Budapest , where he won the middleweight title a. a. with victories over August Jokinen, Finland, Spitzer, Hungary, Conrad Aberg, Finland and Robert Oksa from Finland. It was Robert Oksa, who was the Swedish national coach from the early 1930s to the 1960s and who led the Swedish wrestlers to great success.

Claes Johansson was also at the light heavyweight division at the 1913 World Championships in Helsinki . But he was not in shape, because he lost 12 of his 13 fights that he had to contest, only fought once and ended up in 14th and last place.
