Career

Edvard Vesterlund (actually Westerlund) started wrestling as a teenager. He started for the Helsinki Athletics Club (Helsingfors). As usual in Finland, he initially only wrestled in the Greco-Roman style. From the mid-1920s, he also went to the mat in national competitions in free style. His international career began as early as 1921 when he finished 3rd in the Greco-Roman style middleweight championship in Helsinki at home . In 1922 Edvard Westerlund was world champion in the Greco-Roman style in Stockholm in the lightweight. In 1924 he achieved the greatest success of his career in Paris with the Olympic victory in the Greco-Roman style in the middleweight division. He also competed in the 1928 Olympic Games in Amsterdam, where he won a bronze medal in the Greco-Roman style in a lightweight . Finally, at the end of his career, he also qualified for the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin. There he started in the Greco-Roman style in the light heavyweight division , but had to be content with 8th place.

In the European Championships, which were held regularly from 1925, he was only at the start in 1933 in Helsinki. He came there in the Greco-Roman style in the middleweight division in 3rd place.

Edvard Westerlund was three times Finnish champion that he did not win this title more often, was mainly due to the strong competition in Finland. His toughest rival was probably Väinö Kokkinen.

Edvard Westerlund's brothers Kalle and Emil were also top wrestlers.
