Career

Kalle Westerlund began wrestling as a teenager like his brothers Edvard and Emil at the Helsinki Athletics Club . He concentrated on the Greco-Roman style.

In 1920 he took 3rd place in the Finnish lightweight championship behind Oskari Friman and his brother Edvard. In 1921 he started again in the lightweight world championship in Helsinki, where he defeated u. a. such strong wrestlers as Albert Kusnets from Estonia and Edvard Huupponen from Finland, but just missed the medal ranks after defeats against his Finnish compatriots Oskari Friman and Juho Ikävalko and the Latvian Rafael Rone with 4th place.

In 1922 he came in the Finnish championship in the lightweight behind Taavi Tamminen and Edvard Huupponen on the 3rd place. In 1924 he became the Finnish runner-up in the lightweight division behind Herman Nykänen. That year he also started at the Olympic Games in Paris in the lightweight. He defeated Fuat Akbas from Turkey and L. Christoffel from Belgium, then lost to Lajos Keresztes from Hungary , but then secured a bronze medal with victories over Alfred Praks from Estonia, František Kratochvíl from Czechoslovakia and Albert Kusnets. That was certainly the greatest success of his wrestling career.
