Adolf Rieger (born August 25, 1899 in Berlin ; † June 12, 1956 ) was a German wrestler . He won a silver medal in the Greco-Roman style in the light heavyweight division at the 1928 Olympic Games in Amsterdam
Career
Adolf Rieger was initially a member of the SC Heros Berlin, the SpVgg Berlin-Ost and in 1931 founded the Berlin KV 1931, for which he fought until the end of the 1930s.
In January 1922, Adolf Rieger defeated the Danish light heavyweight champion Svend Nielsen on points in a city battle between Copenhagen and Berlin. That was the first time that he caused a sensation on the international wrestling mat.
In 1924 he was German heavyweight champion ahead of European champion Ferdinand Muß , Hörde and August Köstner Sr. , Bamberg . In 1926 he represented Germany in an international match against Denmark and was defeated by Einar Hansen . In 1927 he won the German light heavyweight championship before European champions Robert Rupp , Mannheim and Emil Poganiatz , Pirmasens .
In 1927 he started at the European Championships in Budapest in the light heavyweight division. There he won points over Einar Hansen, Denmark, Rudolf Loo, Estonia, Ferenczy, Hungary and Alexander Szabo, Czechoslovakia and lost his last fight against Thure Sjöstedt, Sweden. It was due to the half-baked regulations at the time that he ended up in 4th place. After the 5th round he, Szabo, Sjöstedt and Loo were left, but they had all wrestled against each other. Therefore the competition was over and the number of fault points decided. Szabo got away best with 3 fault points. Sjöstedt and Loo each had 6 fault points and Adolf Rieger had 7 fault points. Although he had defeated Szabo and Loo, he only came in 4th place.
In 1928 Adolf Rieger won the qualification for the 1928 Olympic Games in Amsterdam ahead of Robert Rupp. The participation in the Olympic Games in Amsterdam became the high point of his sporting career. He defeated Einar Hansen, Denmark, Gaupseth, Norway, Otto Pohla , Estonia , Appels, Belgium, and Galuszka, Poland, before losing to Ibrahim Mustafa , Egypt, in the final . Thus he won the silver medal in front of Onni Pellinen , Finland.
In the following years he showed his best performances mostly in the team fights for his BKV, but could no longer stand up to strong German competition such as Rupp, Paul Böhmer , Reichenhall, Anton Vogedes , Dortmund, Erich Siebert , Mainz and Werner Seelenbinder , Berlin push through.
