Onni Wilhelm Pellinen (born February 14, 1899 in Hankasalmi , † October 30, 1945 in Istanbul , Turkey ) was a Finnish wrestler .

Career

Onni Pellinen started wrestling with the capital club Helsingin Visa , which was part of the Finnish Workers' Sports Association TUL . In 1923 he wrestled for the Turun Weikot club, which was also part of the TUL . In 1924 he moved to the Turun Voimamiehet , a club that belonged to the association attached to the World Wrestling Federation . The following year he came to Helsingin Kisa-Veikot . Pellinen was soon among the world's top light heavyweight players and won medals in three consecutive Olympic Games. However, he was denied winning a gold medal. He fought many exciting fights in his career against the Swedish world class wrestlers Carl Westergreen and Rudolf Svensson . In 1928 he was about to win the Olympic Games, but was completely surprisingly defeated in the final against Ibrahim Mustapha, an Egyptian who was completely unknown in the international wrestling scene at the time, and had to be satisfied with the silver medal. In 1935 he started for the Helsingin Paini-Miehet for the last time at Finnish championships and finished sixth at the European championships in Copenhagen. Nioch in the same year he went to Turkey as a trainer and quickly led the Turkish wrestlers to the top of the world. Pellinen died in Turkey in 1945 at the age of 46.

Onni Pellinen was in 1923 in the light heavyweight and in 1922 in the middleweight champion of the workers' sports federation TUL and in 1926, 1927, 1929, 1931, 1932 and 1935 Finnish champion in the light heavyweight, each in Greco-Roman style and in 1933 champion in freestyle, light heavyweight.
