Hjalmar Nyström

Hjalmar Eemil Nyström (born March 28, 1904 in Helsinki ; † December 6, 1960 there ) was a Finnish wrestler .

Life

He grew up in Helsinki and belonged to the Helsingin Atleettiklubi . Together with Arvo Niemelä, he was the dominant Finnish heavyweight wrestler in the 1930s. In 1924 he became Finnish champion in the Greco-Roman style for the first time, but was used at the Olympic Games in Paris in a free style, which was still unknown to him at the time, and was promptly eliminated after the first round after a defeat against Swiss Robert Roth . He won six medals at international championships, but never made it to the top podium. Nyström was particularly successful in the traditional country battles against Sweden . He won 10 of 12 fights and defeated the entire Swedish elite from Carl Westergren to Rudolf Svensson , Johan Richthoff , Georg Nielsen , Thure Sjöstedt and John Nyman . In 1932 he could not be sent to the Olympic Games in Los Angeles by his association for financial reasons, although he was a sure medal candidate.

National successes

Hjalmar Nyström won the Finnish heavyweight championship, Greco-Roman style in 1924, 1926, 1927, 1928, 1930, 1931, 1935, 1936, 1937 and 1939. In 1932, 1933, 1934 and 1938 he was runner-up behind Arvo Niemelä .
