Lauterbach is a district of the town of Putbus on the German Baltic Sea island of Rügen .

The place has about 500 inhabitants and is located southeast of Putbus on the Greifswalder Bodden . Lauterbach has a port as well as a connection to the railway network of both the standard gauge and the Rügen bathing railway "Rasender Roland" .

history

The first known development in modern times in the local area took place in 1819, when a paper mill was built between the forest area of Goor and Neuendorf . Before that, Prince Wilhelm Malte zu Putbus had set up the first seaside resort on Rügen in 1816 on the beach in Neuendorf further south. The name of the place goes back to the wife of the prince, born von Lauterbach . At first the seaside resort consisted only of tents and bathing carts . In 1817/1818 a permanent bathhouse in the classicist style was built in the Goor east of the village , which was used as a miners' rest home during the GDR era.

So that ships could dock, it was decided in 1834 to build a landing stage. For this, however, the quieter bay in the area of today's Lauterbach was chosen and not Neuendorf. The first settlement was established between 1833 and 1836. The first documentary mention dates from 1840. At that time, the settlement had seven houses. The construction of the landing stage enabled ships from Sweden and Oder barges and steamers from Stettin and Stralsund to dock. The bathing business soon declined, but for a long time remained dominant alongside boat building, fishing and trade.

In 1890 the railway line from Bergen via Putbus to Lauterbach was completed. Until 1945 there was a connection to Lauterbach landing site. In 1998 the final stop at Lauterbach Mole at the harbor was put into operation and the old station in Lauterbach was closed for a few years. Since the summer of 1999, the standard-gauge trains on the route from Putbus to Lauterbach Mole have been supplemented by the narrow-gauge trains of the “Rasender Roland” of the Rügen Kleinbahn von Göhren , as this section of the route was provided with a three - rail track . The old Lauterbach station building, which is under monument protection , has been stopped again since December 9, 2006.

In 1901/1902 the port was laid out. In the meantime, in addition to fishing and boat building companies, there is also a sport boat harbor with several jetties on the east side of the harbor, which has been further expanded in recent years.

economy

In Lauterbach there are various smaller businesses in the catering and accommodation sector. The port, from which passenger ships leave and which is also used as a marina , is important for the local economy . An important tourist destination is the island of Vilm, not far from Lauterbach . Boat building and fishing are carried out.
