The Bergen auf Rügen – Lauterbach Mole railway is a single-track branch line on the island of Rügen in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania .

Route description

The line branches off the Stralsund – Sassnitz line at the Bergen station on Rügen . It runs south-east, via Putbus to Lauterbach Mole and ends directly at the Rügischer Bodden . In Putbus there is a connection to the steam-powered narrow-gauge railway "Rasender Roland" to Göhren via Ostseebad Binz . The section between the integration of the “Rasenden Roland” at Putbus station to Lauterbach Mole has been developed as a three - rail track to enable parallel operation with the narrow-gauge railway.

history

Until the opening of the Rügen dam in 1935, there was only an isolated railway network on the island of Rügen. There were two standard-gauge lines, Altefähr - Sassnitz and the line branching off in Bergen to Lauterbach. This line was opened on August 15, 1889 to Putbus and extended to Lauterbach on May 15, 1890. Until 1945 there was a connection to Lauterbach landing site.

In 1998 the final stop at Lauterbach Mole was put into operation and the station in Lauterbach was closed. Since May 28, 1999, the Putbus - Lauterbach Mole section has been designed with three rails (750/1435 mm), on which the narrow-gauge trains of the Rügen Baths Railway (RüBB) and the standard-gauge trains alternate in summer. Lauterbach has been operating again as a breakpoint since December 9, 2006.

After the insolvency of the Karsdorfer Eisenbahngesellschaft (KEG), which had handled the train service from the 2003/2004 timetable change, the Ostmecklenburgische Eisenbahn (OME) received an order from the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania to carry out local rail passenger transport . From March 1st, 2004 the traffic was carried out by the OME. From 2005 to December 2009 the train traffic was provided by the Ostseeland Verkehr GmbH (OLA) . This was created through a merger of the Ostmecklenburgischen Eisenbahn GmbH (OME) and the Mecklenburg Bahn GmbH (MEBA). With the timetable change in December 2009, the Eisenbahn-Bau- und Betriebsgesellschaft Pressnitztalbahn mbH (PRESS) took over the operation of the line for nine years. The Pressnitztalbahn was also able to win the tender for the follow-up contract, which began in 2017 and will run from December 2018 to December 2027.

On September 9, 2014, DB Netz AG put the Putbus – Lauterbach Mole section (both inclusive) to tender for takeover, as it was unable to operate this route economically in the long term. The Eisenbahn-Bau- und Betriebsgesellschaft Pressnitztalbahn mbH (PRESS) then bought this section of the route from DB Netz AG and now operates it itself.

Train traffic

Since the timetable change on December 13, 2009, the route has been operated every two hours (from May to August every hour) by the Eisenbahn-Bau- und Betriebsgesellschaft Pressnitztalbahn mbH (PRESS) with a Regio-Shuttle from Stadler ; At the end of 2018, the hourly service was extended to the entire timetable year. In the summer half of the year, the trains of the narrow-gauge railway " Rasender Roland " from Göhren run every two hours on the Putbus – Lauterbach Mole section .
