The Karsdorfer Eisenbahngesellschaft GmbH (KEG) was a private railway company that emerged in the 1990s from the works railway of the Karsdorf cement works ( Saxony-Anhalt ).

Company and operation

In addition to handling this company traffic, the KEG expanded its business activities in the following years to include the Germany-wide handling of construction train and freight traffic . It became known in specialist circles through the purchase of a large number of diesel locomotives from Romania to haul heavy freight trains and the majority stake in the local wagon manufacturer Romvag from Caracal . At the same time, the KEG was also active in passenger transport on routes in the Naumburg – Artern, Weißenfels – Zeitz and Merseburg – Querfurt areas. For this purpose, it took over - in addition to DB Regio AG - 30% of the shares in the newly founded Burgenlandbahn GmbH. Initially, it used MAN railbuses that were bought second-hand , and later new LVT / S railcars were procured for these services . In addition, from the 2003/2004 timetable change until its bankruptcy, it carried out passenger traffic on the Bergen – Lauterbach route .

The end

In 2003, the KEG ran into financial difficulties, which led to the company filing for insolvency proceedings on February 12, 2004 , which were opened on March 31, 2004. Most of the locomotives were sold to Poland; the shares in the Burgenland Railway were taken over by DB Regio AG . The German business activities in construction train transport went to ARCO Transportation , while the services in long-distance rail freight transport were taken over by competitors.
