Bernhard Hüttenegger (born August 27, 1948 in Rottenmann , Styria ) is an Austrian writer .

Life

Bernhard Hüttenegger grew up in Rottenmann, where he also attended elementary and secondary school. He has two younger sisters. The late father was an employee of the Sparkasse in Rottenmann. Mother and sister ran a shoe shop in Rottenmann.

At the age of 14 he moved to Graz. There he completed his training as a primary school teacher. However, he never practiced this profession. He also studied German and history at the Karl Franzens University in Graz . When he had already started his dissertation, he came to a turning point. In 1971 he began to write regularly for the " manuscripts " and was a member of the " Forum Stadtpark ". Later he separated from the "Forum". In 1973 he decided to become a freelance writer and against studying.

As a result, he wrote as bread work for numerous magazines and daily newspapers ( Die Presse , Kleine Zeitung , Kronen Zeitung ) and was a literary critic and reviewer. He wrote down his travel and island experiences in the form of travel reports for the Neue Zürcher Zeitung .

The young author enjoyed his time in Graz, he says himself that he was a "sore thumb" there and describes Graz as his "youth home". He published his first book in 1975 ( Observations of a Blind Runner ). Numerous other books with novels, poems and essays for various publishers followed. Hüttenegger also writes radio plays.

In 1978 he gave up his apartment in Graz and moved to Launsdorf in Carinthia. He spent ten years in Carinthia and went to Vienna in 1988. In 1998 Hüttenegger married his longtime partner in St. Veit an der Glan in Carinthia. Since then the author has lived alternately in Vienna and Carinthia.

The author gave his first reading in 1969 in St. Pölten. Readings followed in Moscow, Hamburg, Frankfurt am Main, Trieste , Ljubljana , Geneva, Zurich, Bern, Kiel, Vienna and in villages and cities in Styria. Because of a rare muscle disease diagnosed in 2002, he withdrew.

Stays abroad led Hüttenegger to England, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Greece, Italy, Ireland, Iceland, Yugoslavia and became the starting point for publications. Hüttenegger, who is an early bird and has shifted his literary work to the morning hours, says of himself that he is more of a loner and an outsider.

In most cases, he does not use significant events as an occasion for his descriptions. It's the simple, seemingly banal situations. In Hüttenegger's works the seemingly ordinary is alienated, distorted and exposed to absurdity.
