The Burgenlandbahn was a brand that DB Regio AG used until December 2019 for local rail passenger transport (SPNV) in southern Saxony-Anhalt . Since 1999 it has served several branch lines, some of which have been canceled or given to other transport companies over time. High hopes were associated with it that the area network could be permanently secured through low operating costs despite the low population density.

Current numbers

The Burgenland Railway served 32 stops in a transport area of 2,200 km² and traveled a route network of 100 kilometers in length. Around 1.15 million train kilometers were made annually.

history

Burgenlandbahn GmbH

The Burgenlandbahn GmbH (BLB) in 1998 as a joint subsidiary of DB Regio AG (70 percent) and Karsdorfer railway company founded (CEC, 30 percent) and started operations at the beginning of the 1999th After the KEG filed for bankruptcy on February 12, 2004 , DB Regio took over its shares in April 2004.

The first transport contract between the state of Saxony-Anhalt and the Burgenland Railway ran from January 1, 1999 to December 31, 2006. After the 2003 tender, the Burgenland network was awarded again to the Burgenland Railway for a further twelve years until 2018. The network used remained the same except for the two canceled routes Nebra-Artern and Röblingen am See - Querfurt and the newly added route Berga-Kelbra-Stolberg .

With retroactive effect from January 1, 2007, Burgenlandbahn GmbH was merged with its parent company DB Regio AG . However, operations continued under the brand name Burgenlandbahn.

Problems 2006

Vehicle of the Burgenland Railway in Weißenfels

During a routine examination of the locomotives of the Burgenland Railway in April 2006, cracks were found in the vehicle frame, which for the time being do not allow further use from the point of view of operational safety. All class 672 railcars were then taken out of service with immediate effect and transferred to Halle (Saale) for repair and general overhaul . Due to the total failure of the Burgenland Railway, major problems arose in the first few weeks after the shutdown, as mainly buses were now commuting between the individual routes as part of the rail replacement service.

Deutsche Bahn AG was only able to provide replacement trains with great difficulty. Four weeks after the shutdown of the 672 series, most of the routes could be occupied by loaned trains of the 641 and 628 series , which meant that operations could largely resume as scheduled.

Despite this, there were problems in the personnel area. While no conductor or inspector was usually required in the old railcars, staff were required for the alternative trains because they did not have a suitable ticket machine for the MDV area . This was mostly due to the fact that these trains came from all over Germany. a. from Thuringia . Apart from the larger train stations such as Zeitz , Merseburg , Weißenfels , Artern or Naumburg (Saale) , none of the train stations has a ticket machine.

With the timetable change on December 10, 2006, the 672 series vehicles could be put back into operation.

Developments in 2007/2008

With the timetable change on December 9, 2007, the operation of the Burgenland Railway on the Naumburg – Teuchern and Weißenfels – Zeitz routes was severely restricted. From Monday to Friday there were only 5 connections between Naumburg and Teuchern, all others were canceled. This also included all traffic on the weekend. As a replacement, on-call buses were set up due to massive public protests against the timetable reductions. The weekend timetable between Weißenfels and Zeitz was reduced to two-hour intervals, and two connections were dropped on weekdays. In return, late connections were set up between the two locations with connections to regional and intercity trains in Weißenfels. The train now runs until after 11 p.m. instead of 9 p.m.

Also in December 2007, passenger traffic on the Merseburg – Schafstädt route should be completely stopped due to the low number of passengers and the cancellation of regionalization funds. However, the connection was ordered for an initial two years, during which it was to "prove itself" by increasing its attractiveness and thus the number of passengers. When the timetable changed on December 14, 2014, passenger traffic on KBS 588 Merseburg – Schafstädt was discontinued, and PNVG line 728 has been operating since that day .

Developments in 2009

After the Deutsche Regionalisenbahn (DRE), the new operator of the Nebra-Artern section of the Unstrutbahn, had built a makeshift platform in Wangen (Unstrut) and the state of Saxony-Anhalt ordered the traffic for the Nebra-Wangen section, the Burgenland Railway took up on April 10, 2009 regular traffic. This means that there is a direct rail connection from the direction of Naumburg for visitors to the Arche Nebra, which opened in summer 2007 (the visitor center to the Nebra sky disc ).

Developments in 2018

NASA tendered all non-electrified railway lines whose order was financially secure in the long term as the Saxony-Anhalt diesel network throughout Europe. After the Merseburg – Querfurt and Weißenfels – Zeitz railway lines were initially included as an option, they were finally completely removed from the tender. The contract for the network including the Naumburg Ost – Wangen (RB 77) line was awarded to the competitor Abellio Rail Mitteldeutschland , which took over operations when the timetable changed in December 2018.

A BR672 of the Burgenlandbahn as a special trip in Donndorf.

For several years, several times a year special trips were organized in cooperation with IG Unstrutbahn e. V. carried out in which the regular journeys beyond Wangen were extended to the Donndorf in Thuringia . These have been continued by Abellio Rail Mitteldeutschland since the operator change. There were special tickets because the trips were not ordered by the country.

For the lines Merseburg – Querfurt (RB 78) and Weißenfels – Zeitz (RB 76), the new contract for the "Elster-Geiseltal network" with DB Regio came into force in December 2019. A total of six modernized diesel multiple units of the type VT 641 will be used on both lines . The loss of the last two lines means the end of the Burgenlandbahn after 20 years, as the DB Regio Südost brand will no longer be used.

vehicles

In use were u. a. since 1999 19 two-axle light combustion railcars of the type DWA LVT / S (series 672), the number of which has decreased over the years due to route cancellations. They were based in the Leipzig Hbf Süd depot. Maintenance at the Central German Railway at the Buna Werke in Schkopau has been taking place since mid-2017 .

The railcars were usually used in single traction, on Geiseltal and Unstrut railways also in double traction. They have an automatic coupling. By December 2010, the regional trains from Naumburg and Weißenfels in Teuchern for the onward journey to Zeitz were combined or winged in the opposite direction in order to be able to offer connections on both routes without changing trains.

Some of the vehicles were sold to the Hanseatic Railway in 2018 , three more will be used by the Dessau-Wörlitzer Railway . The future of the other railcars is unclear.
