The Naumburg – Teuchern line is a branch line in Saxony-Anhalt . It runs from Naumburg (Saale) via Stoss to Teuchern and connects the main railways Halle – Bebra (Thuringian Railway) and Weißenfels – Zeitz (–Gera) . With the timetable change in December 2010, passenger traffic on the Naumburg (Saale) Ost – Teuchern section was discontinued.

history

As early as 1870, plans ripened to build a direct railway line from Zeitz westwards to Thuringia in order to avoid the detours via Weißenfels or Gera. The line was to run from Naumburg via Stoß , Meineweh and Droy says to Zeitz and, together with the Artern – Naumburg and Zeitz – Altenburg lines that were also planned or already under construction, part of a long-distance connection from Nordhausen to Chemnitz . This project was rejected by the responsible Prussian minister for economic reasons. Instead, the Zeitz – Camburg railway line , which ran further south, was built by 1897 . The Naumburg-Teucherner Bahn was only opened on June 28, 1900. In its early days it was mainly used to transport industrial goods from Zeitz towards Halle and Erfurt.

During the GDR times were u. a. Freight trains with sugar beets from the Thuringian Basin or cement from Karsdorf and coal from the Profen area left. The railway line was also popular as a diversion line for the Thuringian Railway. In the 1980s, when the Thuringian Railway was being expanded between Naumburg and Weißenfels, it was not uncommon for scheduled freight trains and international express trains to run between Naumburg and Teuchern.

At the beginning of the 1990s, traffic almost ceased, as freight and passenger traffic had declined rapidly since the peaceful revolution in 1989 . The timetables from this time only list four to five pairs of trains on workdays, only a part of which was tied through Teuchern to and from Zeitz. On Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays, the passenger train traffic stopped completely. After the merger of the Zeitz, Naumburg and Nebra districts to form Burgenlandkreis in 1994, the situation changed again, as the railway was manifested in the context of the Unstrutbahn as an essential cross-connection of the newly founded district.

Trains in Naumburg Ost station (2007)

In 1995, Deutsche Bahn AG handed over the operation of the route to the Karsdorfer Eisenbahngesellschaft (KEG), which operated the passenger transport with MAN rail buses . In 1999, the Burgenlandbahn , a subsidiary of DB Regio and KEG, passenger with DWA LVT / S . From then on, passenger trains ran every two hours on the weekends, which were tied through by union with the railcars from Weißenfels in Teuchern to Zeitz. Between 2004 and 2006, the entire line was completely renovated and expanded.

In the end, mainly commuters, but also vocational school students to the Zeitz vocational school center on the Naumburg-Teuchern railway, were in passenger transport. Due to the low number of passengers and the cut in regionalization funds, the railway was soon put to the test again. With the timetable change on December 9, 2007, the offer was initially reduced to 5 train pairs on working days. At the weekend there was again no train offer.

At the 2010/2011 timetable change, passenger traffic on the Naumburg Ost – Teuchern section was discontinued and replaced by buses. Since this meant that the route could no longer be operated economically for DB Netze, it was put out to tender at the end of March 2011 for delivery to other railway infrastructure companies (EIU). Until the route was taken over by the EIU ZossenRail Betriebsgesellschaft mbH on October 1, 2013, freight trains only ran very rarely on the route.

For the 2012 wine festival in Freyburg , there was a special train service on the route between Zeitz and Naumburg Ost with a connection to the trains in the direction of Wangen. In the meantime, the route has been leased by the new EIU Zossen Rail Betriebsgesellschaft , which intends to set up two new stops in Naumburg if Nahverkehrsservice Sachsen-Anhalt GmbH (NASA) orders the traffic. NASA announced in August 2017 that it would commission an investigation. In doing so, it complies with a request from IG Unstrutbahn to improve the accessibility of the Burgenland Clinic, the District Office and the commercial and shopping park.

The new infrastructure operator ZossenRail set the net train path price for the nineteen kilometer section between Naumburg Ost (exclusively) and Teuchern (exclusively) at over 39,000 euros, so that there has been no more train traffic since then. Since the line could not be operated economically in this way, the owner put the Wethau - Teuchern section of the line to tender for other railway infrastructure companies to take over. When no interested party came forward, ZossenRail applied to the Saxony-Anhalt Ministry of Transport to close this section after the end of the tender. For the non-traveled section Naumburg Ost - Wethau, ZossenRail hopes to extend the ordered local rail transport to a shopping center.

Route description

In Naumburg Central Station, the branch line crosses the Halle – Bebra line in a large curved track. It then runs through the hilly area from Naumburg to Stoß, continuously ascending, overcoming an altitude of 120 meters. Bridge structures, high dams and cuttings alternate constantly. At the level of the former Scheiplitz stop, the train crosses a forest area with small lakes. The Naumburg-Teucherner Bahn crosses the BAB 9 behind the village of Stoß . In Teuchern it meets the railway line from Weißenfels on the right-hand side and unites with it in a large turnout in the direction of Zeitz and Gera.
